6 Tips for Safe Halloween Driving

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – On October 31st, parents, children, ghosts, ghouls, and goblins will all make their way to the streets to take part in the annual tradition of trick-or-treating. However, due to the busy atmosphere and large crowds of people walking around at night, Halloween is also one of the most dangerous times of the year. According to Safe Kids USA, children are twice as likely to be involved in vehicle-related accidents on Halloween than they would any other day of the year. Make the road safer for trick-or-treaters this year with these 6 tips for safe Halloween driving.

1. Check Your Oil and Coolant

6 Tips for Safe Halloween Driving

Your vehicle's oil and coolant help to regulate the temperature of your engine, preventing it from overheating as you drive. Without proper oil levels, your engine's components will rub against one another, creating friction, producing heat and causing damage to important parts of your engine. Additionally, a low coolant level can cause heat to produce at a much faster rate, which can quickly create problems within your engine and its components. An overheating engine can cause a vehicle to break down and increase the chances of traffic buildups and accidents on the road. Keep an eye on your fluid levels to increase your safety on the road!

Our Recommendation: You should have your oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles, or whenever your vehicle owner's manual tells you to do so, and have your coolant checked and changed every 30,000 miles. If you aren't sure how to check your oil or coolant, our guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions and indicators to determine whether or not you need your oil or coolant changed!

2. Test Your Headlights and Taillights

6 Tips for Safe Halloween Driving

If you're planning on driving at night, one of the most important components to check before you hit the road are your headlights and taillights. Your headlights will help you spot pedestrians and hazards on the road as you drive, keeping both you and other trick-or-treaters safe this Halloween. Your taillights serve a similar purpose, as they help to notify pedestrians and other drivers behind you when you are preparing to stop or take a turn. Making sure your headlights and taillights are in working condition can make a huge difference this Halloween season.

Our Recommendation: Bring a friend along for this one! When the sun goes down, have them stand in front of your parked vehicle as you turn it on, engaging the headlights. Next, turn on your left turn signal, then your right turn signal. After that, make your buddy stand behind the vehicle and repeat the process. If they notice any dim or dark headlights or taillights, wait until the morning and then bring it into our Service Center. We'll make sure your lights are in proper working condition before Halloween begins!

3. Practice Street Safety

6 Tips for Safe Halloween Driving

Street safety might seem like a no-brainer if you've been driving for a long time, but people can be very unpredictable on Halloween. Groups will frequently jaywalk or cross the street at the last second at busy intersections. While this may be frustrating as a driver, practicing defensive driving during the holiday season can make the difference between a minor inconvenience and a Halloween nightmare.

Our Recommendation: Pay very close attention to speed limits, crosswalks, and other street signs that can indicate whether or not you will need to stop. If you see pedestrians attempting to cross the road, give them the right of way and allow them to proceed. Additionally, if you approach a yellow light, do not try to make the light and cross the intersection! This is an extremely unsafe driving habit and can lead to dangerous consequences. Refer to these Halloween driving safety tips to keep your trick-or-treaters and passengers safe this year.

4. Fill Your Tires

6 Tips for Safe Halloween Driving

Driving with low air in your tires can affect your vehicle in a variety of ways. You'll experience poor gas mileage, have difficulty braking, and may even encounter damage to your axles or wheels themselves. Keeping your tires properly inflated can help you avoid accidents, costly repairs, and will greatly improve your fuel economy.

Our Recommendation: First, check the amount of PSI or pressure your vehicle owner's manual says your tires should be at. Next, purchase a tire gauge to help you determine your tires' PSI. Finally, head to a nearby gas station or tire inflation center and find the nearest air pump. Unscrew the small cap on your hubcap and insert the air pump, pressing down on the lever to engage the air. Alternate filling your tires with pressure and checking your tires' pressure on the gauge to determine when they are at their appropriate level. Lastly, once you've successfully filled all your tires to their proper PSI, screw the caps back on your tires.

5. Use Your Vehicle's Advanced Safety Features

6 Tips for Safe Halloween Driving

Do you own a new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac vehicle? Good news! It's probably equipped with a suite of advanced safety features! From the optional Adaptive Cruise Control to the standard Rear Vision Camera, you can make the road a much safer place with your vehicle's safety features.

Our Recommendation: If you own or are interested in buying or leasing a new vehicle, explore some of the advanced safety features that come standard or optional on most GM vehicles, then let us know if you want to schedule a test drive to see how this technology works in person!

6. Have Your Vehicle Inspected

6 Tips for Safe Halloween Driving

The best way to ensure that your vehicle is run effectively on the road this Halloween is to have it inspected. Our ASE Certified service team members can help with oil changes, coolant flushes, tire changes, headlight replacements, and much more. You can schedule a check-up to have your vehicle's important components inspected to make sure that it is safe to drive.

Our Recommendation: The best way to keep your vehicle in great shape is by staying up to date on its routine maintenance. It's an important part of vehicle ownership that can often be overlooked, but proper care and effort will ensure that your car, truck, crossover, or SUV lasts a very long time.

It is always better to be safe than sorry, especially on a busy and crowded day like Halloween. Make the streets a less dangerous place this October 31st with these 6 tips for safe Halloween driving. As we mentioned earlier, one of the best ways to protect yourself on the road is to take advantage of the advanced safety features available on GM vehicles. Also, let us know if you have any questions or would like to try these safety features for yourself by scheduling a free test drive

How the 2018 Chevy Equinox Makes Driving Safer

MT. PLEASANT, Mich., – Whether you're driving alone or with a group, safety is the priority of every vehicle owner. While it is impossible to predict the behavior of other drivers, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox's cutting-edge safety features improve the safety of the driver, its passengers, and any other drivers on the road. Learn about how the 2018 Chevy Equinox makes driving safer with its wide variety of features and improved safety-first design.

Forward Collision Alert with Following Distance Indicator

Forward Collision Alert provides notifications to the driver through sound alerts and a display on their center dashboard if a collision with a vehicle or object in front of the Equinox is imminent. The Forward Collision Alert then applies the brakes to either reduce damage to the vehicle or can ultimately prevent an accident from occurring. Forward Collision Alert comes with a Following Distance Indicator, which provides notifications to drivers if they are tailgating or driving too close to a fellow driver on the road. If you are driving a 2018 Equinox, this advanced feature benefits not only you, but the surrounding drivers as well.

Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning:

Lane Keep Assist technology helps to keep drivers in their lane. If a driver unintentionally drifts into another lane, the center display will illuminate, alerting drivers with a warning and an emergency sound. If the driver continues to drift, the Lane Departure Warning technology will kick in, gently nudging the steering wheel to keep drivers in their appropriate lane to reduce the chances of an accident.

Side Blind Zone Alert

Side Blind Zone Alert provides foresight to drivers that are traveling on streets or highways with multiple lanes. It notifies and alerts drivers when vehicles are in their blind spots to keep them alert if they plan on merging into other lanes. Using short radar sensors, Side Blind Zone Alert improves the safety of drivers in the Equinox and other surrounding vehicles as well.

How the 2018 Chevy Equinox Makes Driving Safer

Rear Cross Traffic Alert:

Whether you're backing out of your driveway or a parking spot, Rear Cross Traffic Alert works with the standard Rear-End Camera to alert drivers of incoming traffic or hazards as they back out of their parking spots. The center display will notify the driver with sound and visual alerts, using radar technology to detect nearby hazards.

How the 2018 Chevy Equinox Makes Driving Safer

Surround Vision

One of the newest features available to owners of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is the addition of Surround Vision technology. Using radar technology and four cameras installed in the front, back, and both sides of the vehicle, drivers are given a 360-degree view of the Equinox's exterior. Surround Vision is utilized when drivers put their 2018 Equinox into reverse, assisting drivers with pulling out in order to avoid hazards on every angle of the Equinox. When drivers shift their vehicle into Drive, Surround Vision displays a frontal view of the Equinox for a short time to display any hazards that the driver may not initially notice.

Safety Features Worth Having in Your Next Car

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.–– Safety on the road is more important than ever before! According to the National Security Council, vehicle deaths in 2016 went up by 6% and were the highest they've been since 2007. While remaining cautious and aware on the road will greatly reduce your chances of getting into a car accident, additional safety features in newer vehicles can also help to prevent accidents from occurring. Read on to learn about the new safety features worth having in your next car, and get all of the information on them for when you finally purchase your next vehicle. To learn what vehicles offer these features, take a look at our vehicle inventory to preview each vehicle's unique safety features and their benefits!

Safety Features Worth Having in Your Next Car

Lane Keep Assist

Lane Keep Assist technology is a camera-based system that alerts you when you unintentionally drift into another lane. If you don't move back into your lane and continue to drift, the system will gently nudge your steering wheel to keep you in your lane. The technology monitors the patterns of the road and alerts you through your vehicle dashboard display with images and audio alerts to keep you aware on the road. Lane Keep Assist technology also ensures your accountability on the road by sending you alerts when you don't use your turn signals. This keeps you and others safer on multi-lane roads and highways.

Forward Safety Awareness

Similar to Lane Keep Assist, Forward Safety Awareness technology uses cameras to monitor and then alert you of impending danger in front of the vehicle, reminding drivers to keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead of them. The technology uses a radar system to alert you of slowing vehicles ahead of you through your vehicle dashboard display and sound. If an imminent collision is about to occur, the Forward Safety Awareness technology will automatically apply brakes to either reduce the damage of a collision or prevent it from occurring at slower speeds.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

Rear Cross Traffic Alert technology informs you of approaching drivers or hazards as you back out of parkings spots or driveways with radar technology and the vehicle's rear-facing camera. Using the vehicle dashboard display, Rear Cross Traffic Alert gives you a clear image of the area behind the vehicle, providing alerts for moving objects, nearby hazards, and radar to protect you from backing into anything. This technology works hand-in-hand with Rear Camera technology, which is standard on every new General Motors vehicle.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Available on most modern GM vehicles, Adaptive Cruise Control technology helps to improve traditional cruise control technology with new, advanced features. It allows you to adjust your cruise control speed to automatically match the drivers in front of you, virtually eliminating the need to constantly brake and accelerate to accommodate others' speeds. You can also adjust the "follow gap", or space between other vehicles, to give other drivers a short or wide berth so they're able to merge into your lane accordingly.

Front and Rear Parking Assist

With Front and Rear Parking Assist technology, you'll never have to worry about parking in a difficult spot again! Front and rear facing cameras on the vehicle provide digital guidelines and alerts to help you adjust your position to prevent you from hitting other vehicles. This technology is poised to help everyone, from new drivers to experts, and can be used in parallel park situations to ease the process and make it significantly less stressful for drivers. This technology is standard on most GM models and is a great additional feature to compliment your new ride!

While it is impossible to predict the behaviors of other drivers, remaining aware and alert from the moment you pull out of your driveway to the moment you park will help greatly reduce your chances of getting in an accident. These safety features worth having in your next car will help to further reduce your risk, but should be used in conjunction with your alertness! Don't use these safety features as an excuse to not pay attention on the road. In the event of an accident, first, follow our FAQ on car accidents, then call us for additional accident assistance. We can assist you through the entire process, from towing your vehicle to contacting your insurance. Don't hesitate to ask for help!

Cadillac Announces New V2V Safety on CTS Models

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,––Cadillac has just announced the new V2V safety feature which will come standard on CTS models, beginning with mid-2017 models in production now. V2V stands for vehicle-to-vehicle, and means models equipped with this feature will be able to communicate back and forth. This system isn't meant to be used for "breaker, breaker" and other trucker talk, but to communicate possible dangers on the road.

Cadillac Announces New V2V Safety on CTS Models

Vehicles equipped with this feature will be enable alerts to other vehicles up to 1,000 ft away. For instance, if two Cadillac CTS's are on the highway and one is ahead of the other experiencing slippery conditions, the vehicle behind will get an alert. Can you imagine a warning for icy spots on the road? This one feature could save a lot of unnecessary accidents by giving drivers a simple heads up, which is especially great for Michigan drivers in the winter.

Aside from the slippery road alert, there will be other alerts for things like hazard lights or hard braking ahead. This technology uses Dedicated Short-Range Communications and GPS. The alerts can be customized to the driver's preference. The next-generation of infotainment from Cadillac allows users to choose whether the alerts will show up in the instrument cluster or the heads-up display.

Cadillac Announces New V2V Safety on CTS Models

Although this V2V feature announced by Cadillac is strictly for CTS models, we would love to see this executed across entire model year lines for a safer future. Cadillac will be rolling this technology through the mid-interim 2017 model year CTS vehicles, but offers plenty of other safety features in their entire lineup. Some of the features you'll enjoy include the rearview camera mirror, auto front and rear braking, lane keep assist, forward collision mitigation, and so many more.

If you're interested in seeing what Cadillac has to offer, check out all Cadillac models, download vehicle brochures, shop our inventory, and schedule a test drive at Graff Mt. Pleasant!

GMC Takes Safety to a New Level

GMC Takes Safety to a New Level

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – While automakers find more ways to make new vehicles better, GMC puts safety features first. GMC takes safety to a new level with features that are not what you would expect. Instead of creating more alert systems for your vehicle’s surroundings, GMC is taking the lead over other automaker brands by creating the industry-first Rear Seat Reminder feature. The Rear Seat Reminder feature will make its debut in the new 2017 GMC Acadia models and will become a desirable feature in the SUV.

When life gets busy, sometimes the most organized people can forget something in the back seat. GMC is tackling the back seat problems head on according to Tricia Morrow, GM global safety strategy engineer. She stated, “Whether it’s your lunch, laptop, pet or most importantly, your child, it’s easier than it seems to forget what’s in the back seat when moving between life’s events. With this new feature, we are leading the charge to address this ongoing problem.”

So we know the Rear Seat Reminder is a good thing to have when it comes to the safety of preventing children or animals from being left unattended in a vehicle, but how does the Rear Seat Reminder work? Well the new reminder system monitors the GMC Acadia’s rear doors. It can detect if either rear door is opened or closed within 10 minutes of your Acadia starting. It can also detect your rear doors while the vehicle is running. Once the Acadia is turned off a message will display across the driver’s information center that reads “Rear Seat Reminder/ Look in Rear Seat”.

GMC Takes Safety to a New Level

GMC has created the new Rear Seat Reminder technology to help lower the statistics of children and animals dying of heatstroke, and to help lower the larceny percentage in vehicles. Now that GMC takes safety to a new level, the innovative reminder technology will be a standard feature in 2017 Acadia. If you want to experience the GMC SUV for yourself stop by Graff Buick GMC Cadillac in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. We can get you behind the wheel of a 2016 GMC Acadia, where you can enjoy a GMC IntelliLink technology, split back seats for more cargo room, and all wheel drive for a more family friendly and flexible SUV. GM is Driving Safer with a New Active Safety Test Area

GM is Driving Safer with a New Active Safety Test Area

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI – GM just opened a brand new Active Safety Test Area at its Milford Proving Ground costing $14 million, and stretching 52 acres. Safety engineers will develop and test safety technologies for vehicles around the world here.

The 2016 models of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac will offer 22 different active safety technologies, all ranging from alerts to ones that can assist drivers in dangerous situations.

Some examples of the new technologies include:
  • City Speed Automatic Braking: While city-driving at a lower speed, the system will detect if you get too close to a car and brake for you to reduce the damage of the accident or stop it completely.
  • Front Pedestrian Braking: Also while driving at a low speed, the vehicle will detect a pedestrian walking in front of your car and apply the brakes to minimize the severity of the accident or stop it completely.
  •  Rear Camera Mirror: Rather than your traditional mirror, the camera provides a bigger and less obstructed view of what’s behind you. This makes changing lanes and backing up much easier on the driver.
  • Night Vision: This is an infrared image of the area lit in front of the headlamps. It also gives the driver alerts of any pedestrians or large animals crossing.
  • Curb View Camera: When you’re parking your car the system gives the driver a look at what’s immediately in front of their car. The system will display this right on the center stack to help the driver avoid curbs, poles, and other vehicles.

The new GM Active Safety Test Area makes it easier to test all safety technologies in one place. Some of the features of the new facility include a:
  • 6-acre dynamics pad to test a number of robot-controlled and automated vehicles.
  • Highway simulation with six lanes, on/off ramps, and signs to match roads around the world.
  • Parking test area with a variety of curbs types and landscaping.
  • Pedestrian test area with a 90-degree intersection specially designed for exact dummy movement.
  • Simulated tunnel with walls and posts.
  • Building for indoor testing and observation, as well as hoists for test prep and a robotic control situation.

GM wants to set a new standard for global product safety and to continue being the leading developer of safety technologies for vehicles.

If you have questions about any of the safety options you can get with your next vehicle come to our St. Louis area used car dealership, they can help you find the perfect used car for you.Visit us at your Graff Mt. So, when you get behind the wheel of a new 2015 Buick, you will be able to use voice-controlled connectivity to stay more connected than ever before. Safety is always the number one priority for Buick, so while we all want to stay connected 24/7 it's important to do so safely, and that's no problem now that all 2015 Buick models come standard with Apple Siri Eyes Free & Text Message Alerts! The Apple Siri Eyes Free technology in all 2015 Buick models allows you to ask Siri to make calls, select and play music, hear and compose text messages, get directions and more, while Text Message Alerts will read your incoming texts through the vehicle's speakers.

Not to mention, with the rollout of the new OnStar 4G LTE technology, you have the option to turn your Buick into a moving Wi-Fi hotspot with the touch of a button! That's right, you can connect to high-speed internet no matter where you are. That's something no other manufacturer can say!

These three new features available on Buick's 2015 line-up are just a peek at the whole package. Come get the full luxury experience at Hank Graff Mt. Pleasant!
