MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Picture it: May 5th, 1862. Mexico. The Count de Lorencez leads a force of 8,000 French soldiers under orders from Napoleon III to occupy the city of Puebla, strategically situated between the capital of Mexico City and the country's main Atlantic port, Veracruz. At the time, the French Army was the best in the world. Well-equipped, highly trained, and undefeated for nearly half a century. Much to Lorencez's chagrin, he greatly underestimated the tenacity and strength of the significantly less equipped, less trained, and considerably outnumbered Mexican army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza who sent the French packing and prevented them from reaching the capital.
This victory over the invading French was inspirational to wartime Mexico and helped establish a sense of national unity and patriotism. It also sent a message to the rest of the world that the nation was not to be underestimated, despite not being as advanced in military and infrastructure at the time.
Today, Cinco de Mayo continues to be ceremoniously commemorated in Mexico. However, in the United States, it has become an all-out celebration of Mexican culture as a whole including music, art, films, and dance.
