15 Crazy Halloween Facts

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – Halloween is one of the most beloved holidays of the world, but most people don't even know how it began or why it's celebrated! Check out these 15 crazy Halloween facts to find out why we celebrate Halloween, how jack-o-lanterns came into existence, how heavy the biggest pumpkin in the world weighed, and more below!

15 Crazy Halloween Facts

  1. Halloween has been celebrated for over 6,000 years! It is thought to have originated around 4,000 B.C.E., and since then, has become one of the most celebrated holidays in the world.
  2. Halloween hasn't always been called Halloween. It's gone by several names, like Samhain, All Hallow's Eve, Witches' Night, Snap-Apple Night, and even Summer's End.
  3. Halloween began as a Celtic festival for the dead called "Samhain". People at the time believed that Samhain was the day of the dead and that spirits would roam the earth. They would dress as ghosts and demons and leave "treats" on their front porch for the spirits so that they wouldn't be haunted.
  4. The Jack-o-Lantern was also started in Ireland, based on the story of the ghost of Stingy Jack. Irish people carved terrifying faces into pumpkins, potatoes, beets, and turnips to scare Stingy Jack and other spirits away from their homes on Halloween.
  5. The biggest pumpkin in recorded history weighed over 2,624.6 lbs. That's one big jack-o-lantern!
  6. In the Middle Ages, it was customary for trick-or-treaters to have to sing or dance in order to receive their treats. This was a practice known as "mumming" and is still practiced in some parts of Europe!
  7. This year, Americans are projected to spend over $618 million on pumpkins alone!
  8. Americans spend over $6 billion on Halloween annually, coming in second place to Christmas as the most commercial holiday in the United States.
  9. Halloween candy can last a lot longer than you'd think! Chocolates can last up to two years if stored in a dry area, and hard candy can last up to a year. Thankfully, you won't have to eat all of your candy in one day!
  10. Halloween is the sweetest holiday of the year. Chocolate sold on Halloween doubles the amount sold on Valentine's day. In fact, over $1.9 billion a year is spent on Halloween candy alone in the United States!
  11. Black and orange, the main colors of Halloween, both have symbolic meaning. Orange stands for the strength and endurance of autumn, while black symbolizes death and darkness, paying tribute to Halloween's origin as the day of the dead.
  12. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1st instead of October 31st. Participants dress up like the dead and parade down the street in honor of those that have passed on to the next life.
  13. The Lantern Festival in China is celebrated to commemorate Halloween. Lanterns shaped like dragons are hung throughout streets to guide spirits back to their homes, and families typically leave food and water by their ancestors' portraits to welcome them for the evening.
  14. According to Safe Kids America, children are twice as likely to be involved in car accidents during Halloween. If you're going out, make sure to teach your children about street safety and keep an eye out for vehicles on the road!
  15. It is extremely rare for Halloween to occur during a full moon. The next full moon Halloween will take place on 10/31/2020.

Chevrolet Electric Vehicle Comparison

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a fully electric hatchback sedan that receives an impressive 238 miles-per-charge. As an energy efficient vehicle, the Bolt EV also comes equipped with one-pedal driving technology to save drivers additional energy. One-pedal driving technology allows drivers to recapture any energy expended from driving without having to touch your brakes. While driving in Low mode at any speed, you can slow down by lifting your foot from the accelerator. This impressive new technology extends the life of your brakes and improves the battery of your Bolt EV.

For the more adventurous type, the Bolt EV has the versatility needed for any journey. The seats in the Bolt EV can fold down to give drivers 56.6 cubic feet of cargo space so you can pack anything you need for your next vacation or adventure. How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,–– Every vehicle owner has to deal with routine maintenance at some point or another. Oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements are all necessary forms of routine maintenance that keep your vehicle running at peak efficiency. On the bright side, though, you can check several important components in the comfort of your own home. We've put together instructions to help you learn how to check your oil and tire pressure. If your tires' pressure is low or you need an oil change, schedule an appointment with us at Graff Mt. Pleasant for fast and friendly service today!

How to Check Your Oil

How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

Checking your oil is easy and only takes a few minutes! Follow these quick steps to find out whether or not you need an oil change:

What You'll Need: A cloth

Directions:
  1. Wait a few minutes after turning off your vehicle for your engine to cool down.
  2. Pop the hood and locate the yellow dipstick on your engine. (It should look similar to the image above.)
  3. Pull the dipstick out of your engine and wipe it on a cloth.
  4. Reinsert your dipstick and remove it one more time.
  5. Take a close look at the indicators on your dipstick. Locate the "full" and "empty" labels. If your oil levels are on or below the "empty" component, it's time for an oil change!

Signs You Need an Oil Change

How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

Typically, you should get your oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles, or whenever your vehicle owner's manual tells you to do so. If you aren't sure whether or not you need an oil change, don't worry, it is very easy to figure out for yourself! Keep an eye on these factors to determine whether or not you need an oil change:

  • Your Oil's Color: Fresh oil recently has a light brown, honey color, but over time, it darkens and becomes thicker. If your oil turns black, it's time to get an oil change, as black oil can contain particles that will damage your engine's components!
  • Your Oil's Consistency: The next time you check your oil, take a little bit of oil from your dipstick and rub it between your thumb and finger. If it feels coarse and gritty, it means your oil contains contaminants and needs to be changed.
  • Your Check Engine Light is On: If your check engine light comes on while you drive, schedule a service appointment right away. It could mean your oil needs to be changed or could potentially be something more serious. It's better to be safe than sorry!
  • Your Engine is Louder Than Normal: If your vehicle's engine is louder than it usually sounds, it could mean that your oil needs replacing. As engine oil ages, it loses a lot of its lubricating properties, which can cause your engine's components to create friction and can cause potential damage. Make sure this doesn't happen by scheduling service as soon as possible!

How to Check Your Tire Pressure

How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

Checking your tire pressure is almost as easy as checking your oil! It only takes a few minutes, but you'll want to check all four tires to be sure that they are all at least at the minimum pressure that is required of your vehicle. If you aren't sure what level your tire pressure should be, consult your vehicle owner's manual for more information. Follow these steps to check your tire pressure so that you can determine whether or not you need to re-inflate or replace your tires.

What You'll Need: a reliable tire pressure gauge

Directions:

  1. Wait several hours after driving to check your tire pressure when your tires cool down. That way, you'll receive a more accurate reading, as heat from driving can temporarily reduce your tire pressure.
  2. Remove the end caps on your tires' air valves (the small golden cylinders on your tires). Make sure to set them in a safe place so that they don't get lost.
  3. Insert your tire pressure gauge to check your PSI reading.
    1. If your reading is above the recommended PSI, push the air valve in to let out a little bit of air.
    2. If your reading is below the recommended PSI, fill your tire with air until you reach the recommended level.

Signs Your Tires Need Replacing

How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

It's best to check your tires' air on a monthly basis so that they are always properly inflated or to see if they need replacing. Use these helpful tips to determine whether or not your tires need to be replaced:

  • Your Tire Keeps Deflating: This could be a leak in the tire or could mean your cap is loose. Either way, bring it in to our Service Center and we can have it looked at and patched up right away!
  • Your Tire is Flat: If your tire is too flat to drive on, you'll want to change it with your spare and bring your vehicle in as soon as possible! Driving on a flat tire can damage your vehicle's wheel, spokes, and other important components that make it possible for you to drive.
  • Your Tire's Tread is Low: If your tires have low tread, they're unable to grip the road efficiently and make driving on dirt roads or through weather conditions a much more difficult experience. Use the penny method to determine the tread level of your tires. If the tread is too low, bring your vehicle in and we'll replace your tires.

Keeping up on your routine maintenance can be the difference between you and a costly repair bill. Learning how to check your oil and tire pressure can help you save money and keep your vehicle running its best for years to come. Getting an oil change or tire replacement soon? Browse our service coupons to save on routine maintenance, from battery replacements to oil changes. See why Graff Mt. Pleasant should be your choice for vehicle service and feel free to contact us if you have any questions!

CMU Game Day Traditions

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,–– On Thursday, August 31st, Central Michigan University will be kicking off the football season against the Rhode Island Rams! This season is sure to be full of surprises as the Chippewas make use of their new quarterbacks and improved roster. The Central-Western game, Homecoming, and other adrenaline-pumping games will be sure to satisfy Chippewa fans across the country. Take a look at CMU game day traditions and what diehard fans of the famous maroon and gold enjoy throughout the football season!

Battle for the Cannon

CMU Game Day Traditions

Every year, Central Michigan and Western Michigan battle for their annual rivalry game. The winner takes home "The Cannon", a trophy which pays tribute to the two cannons sitting atop Kelly/Shorts Stadium and Waldo Stadium. Last year, Western took home the Cannon, but this year, CMU has made it their goal to reclaim the one-of-a-kind trophy once again. The Central-Western game will take place on the Chips' home turf this year, giving them a chance to beat the Broncos at Kelly/Shorts Stadium once again!

Homecoming Parade

CMU Game Day Traditions

Starting from the football field and ending in downtown Mt. Pleasant, the annual homecoming parade involves the band, color guard, local businesses, student organizations, and more as they make their way downtown! This annual tradition brings out the best in everyone's game day spirits, as candy, maroon and gold themed items are handed out to audience participants. You can even follow the parade through their journey for an unforgettable experience!

Cardboard Boat Race

CMU Game Day Traditions

Every year, the Industrial Engineering students construct cardboard boats and sail them across the Rose Pond on Homecoming for a heated competition to become the reigning champs of the Cardboard Boat Race. The race occurs on the morning of Homecoming and always attracts quite the large crowd. You'll be able to watch students fight, paddle, and push their way across Rose Pond as they try to make it without sinking. You won't want to miss this fun-filled event!

Kelly/Shorts In-Game Traditions

CMU Game Day Traditions

Kelly/Shorts Stadium is full of in-game traditions, too! With plenty of singalong songs, t-shirt giveaways, and the loud and proud maroon and gold as far as the eye can see, CMU's stadium is full of fun for everyone! These are a few of CMU's best in-game traditions at Kelly/Shorts Stadium:

  • Key Play: During important plays in the game, students and fans will take their keys out and shake them for the entire play to build hype with the audience and team.
  • Cymbal Crash: Many students participate in this tradition, joining along with the band as they crash their cymbals back and forth! The "cymbal crash" is done with an up and down clapping motion to mimic the cymbal crashes.
  • Cannon Shot: Whenever CMU scores in the game, the ROTC students fire a cannon to signify that the Chips are winning the game!
  • Tree Ceremony: Overlooking the stadium itself on Rose Hill, the Bradford Pear tree atop the hill has been the post-game ceremony spot for the marching band during each game day, whether it's a triumphant victory or somber defeat.
  • CMU Fight Song: Everyone, whether diehard fans or first time lovers of the game can enjoy CMU's one-of-a-kind fight song! Learn the song before your next game today:

  • FIGHT Central, down the field,
    FIGHT for Victory, FIGHT, Fellows never yield;
    We're with you, oh Varsity.
Onward with banners bold, to our colors we'll be true,
FIGHT for Maroon and Gold, Down the field for C.M.U.!

VARSITY! Rah! Rah! VICTORY! Rah! Rah!
CHIPPEWA we're proud of that nickname.
Hear our song loud and strong,
CENTRAL is going to win this game!
    Come on and...(Repeat thru "C.M.U.!")

This year, the Central Michigan Chippewas will only be hosting five home games for the season, spending the rest of their time at away games across the country. If you're planning on heading to Kelly/Shorts Stadium this year, make sure you follow these CMU game day traditions to make the most of your time during this upcoming season! Find out how Graff Mt. Pleasant involves itself within the Central Michigan community and how they give back to the amazing town of Mt. Pleasant.
