National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners

National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- For many people, dogs are members of the family. As such, they'll get to tag along on all of the fun family vacations you have planned this summer! Though sometimes, our furry friends can get just a little too excited about all the awesome adventures they'll be going on with you, or they may get a little freaked out by being inside of a moving vehicle. Regardless of the issue, there's always a solution.

Ringing in National Pet Month, Graff Mt. Pleasant is here with 5 travel tips for dog owners.

National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners

1. BURN EXCESS ENERGY

The most important thing you can do before piling your pooch in the car with the rest of the kids is to give him a good dose of physical activity to burn off energy prior to getting on the road. Playing a couple rounds of fetch will make your dog more inclined to rest, thus making the journey a lot smoother and more relaxing for everyone. You can repeat this process over the course of your trip when making a rest stop. Just hook up the leash and do a couple laps in a safe and open area.

2. FOOD AND WATER

Unexpected delays are a part of traveling, which is why you should always be prepared with extra food and water if you've brought your dog along. There are tons of food and water containers for dogs that are specifically designed for travel, and can thus be packed away and transported easily.

3. BE VIGILANT

Even if your dog is highly car-trained, it's always a good idea to take precautions just in case. For instance, it's a fact that dogs love open windows. However, there's always the risk that their super-sensitive noses will pick up a particularly interesting smell, and they'll jump right out of the car. Be aware of your dog's size and crack the window accordingly.

In addition to sensitive smell sense, dogs also have a crazy sense of hearing well-above human levels. That being said, unfamiliar sounds can cause them to retreat to their main source of comfort: you. Which can be very dangerous if you're driving. If you don't feel comfortable crating your dog up for the drive, invest in a "dog hammock" for your back seat. These not only prevent them from falling to the floor should you have to make a hard stop, but also make it harder for them to hop up front and cause a distraction.

4. START THEM YOUNG

The best way to get a dog used to anything is to start when they're a puppy, and that includes traveling. Car-training can even be accomplished with simple trips like running errands. This is also a good time to establish rules and boundaries to keep both you and your pup safe on your adventures.

5. KEEP THE ENERGY POSITIVE

Dogs operate primarily on instinct and thus are highly affected by body language, vocal tones, and emotional vibes. On top of that, as the leader of their pack, they look to you for direction. If you make it seem like something is wrong, your dog will become anxious. That's why it's important to keep the energy positive when traveling with them. Give them frequent notes of affirmation like "You're doing such a great job!" or "That's my good boy/girl!" being sure to use a positive but not excited tone of voice. This will help keep them calm on long drives and prevent any stress that may cause them to put you or themselves in danger.

How to Prepare for a Spring Break Road Trip

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,–– If you've got plans to escape the frigid winter weather of Michigan and are taking a trip to driving somewhere south for Spring Break, we're very jealous of you. However, we would caution you that before you embark on your road trip, your vehicle may not be up to the task without some help! Families, college students, friends, and pretty much everyone should make sure to know how to prepare their car for a spring break road trip. Read on to learn the tips and maintenance suggestions to make your vehicle comfortable and capable of taking the long drive to your Spring Break destination.

How to Prepare for a Spring Break Road Trip

Get an Oil Change

Getting an oil change before a long road trip is very important. Your motor will be running continually for long stretches of miles (and hours) and if your oil is old it won't do its job effectively, lubricating your engine's internal components and keeping them from warping and doing serious damage.

Check Your Fluids

The fluids in your vehicle help keep your internal and external parts clean and running properly. Washer fluid and coolant are easy enough to replenish in your vehicle by picking some up at your local auto parts supplier, or our service technicians can always top off your fluids during your next service appointment at Graff Chevrolet Mt. Pleasant Service Center. With long hours of driving to your spring break destination, your coolant is especially important to help keep your engine from overheating, so make sure you've filled up before you leave for your trip. You don't want to wind up with engine trouble stuck on the side of the road midway to your destination.

Check/Replace Your Wiper Blades

Your wiper blades may be a bit worse for wear coming out of the winter season this year, and ineffective at clearing your windshield properly during rain, sleet, or snow. So before you head out on your spring break road trip, it's important to check your windshield wiper blades to see if they need to be replaced. You don't want to get caught driving on the highway during heavy rain and have to pull off because you can't see the road well due to your streaky windshield wipers, adding more time to an already long road trip.

Check Your Battery

After winter, it's important to get your battery checked to make sure that the freezing cold weather hasn't reduced its capabilities. Our experienced technicians run a simple diagnostic test to see if it's time to get a new battery.

Check Your Tire Tread

As one of the most important components of your vehicle, you want to take tire care seriously. Check your vehicle's tire tread to ensure they are in good enough condition to handle a long trip and effectively stop and handle well out on the road. If you're not sure, use the penny test to determine if your tire tread is satisfactory. Place a penny in-between the treads on your tire with Lincoln's head facing down, if the tread doesn't cover the top of his head, it's time for new tires.

Do Some Spring Cleaning

Your vehicle will likely get a bit messy during your road trip from food wrappers, receipts, crumbs, and other such debris. So, why not start your trip with a tidy vehicle and do some spring cleaning. At the very least, take your vehicle to a car wash and make sure to vacuum up all the road salt and debris tracked in during the winter.

Plan For Rest Time & Switch Drivers

If you're heading out on a long road trip, plan on taking some to rest time from driving and/or switch drivers frequently. Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol.

Create a Roadside Preparedness Kit

To prepare for anything and everything, we recommend creating a roadside preparedness kit. Stock your car with bottled water, road flares, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, blankets, and make sure you have a spare tire and jack just in case.

Bring a Map

While it's easy nowadays to rely on your phone's GPS and navigation systems, you may wind up driving through places with bad cell phone signal. If you take the wrong turn, you could wind up way off track and add more time to your trip. So, bring an old-fashioned paper map to ensure you'll always know how to get where you're going!

Don't Forget a Mobile Phone Charger

Whether its an adapter so you can charge your phone in the car, or a mobile battery to take on your vacation, consider investing in a way to keep your phone from dying on your spring break trip.

Get Roadside Assistance

If you don’t have roadside assistance through your insurance, consider getting AAA. That way, if your vehicle breaks down while on your trip, you’ll always have someone ready to come to the rescue!

So before heading out on vacation, make sure you've prepared your vehicle for your fun and excited Spring Break road trip! Also, maybe you're looking for a new ride to show off this spring? Auto Service Valentines Day Gifts for Your Car

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,–– As Valentines Day approaches, and you prepare to celebrate with your sweetheart, you'll need cards, flowers, chocolates, and all of the usual gifts. But, have you thought about what to get your car? Right, we know it may seem silly to get your car a Valentines Day gift, but think of all that your sedan, truck, or SUV does for you, especially this time of year during the harsh winter weather! Show your car some love by taking care of it with these auto service Valentines Day gift ideas!

Auto Service Valentines Day Gifts for Your Car

Car Detailing/Car Wash

Throughout the winter, your vehicle is subjected to slush, mud, and corrosive road salt that will damage your paint job and rust out the undercarriage. Regular car washes and detailing will protect the integrity of your vehicle's exterior and keep it looking as good as the day you bought it. Show your vehicle you car about it and get it washed and waxed on Valentines Day.

Wiper Blade Replacement

With all the ice that builds up on your windshield and wiper blades during the winter, they are likely to break down from wear and tear. When they do break or tear, your wiper blades won't be able to effectively keep your windshield clear and clean while you're driving, which is important to your safety. If you're in need, stop into our service department to get your windshield wipers replaced today.

Floor Mats

To help your vehicle stay clean, we recommend purchasing a set of Weather Tech Mats for Valentines Day. Weather Tech Mats are the top product for catching and containing all the snow and such that clings to your boots when you enter a vehicle during the winter. Allowing this snow and slush to soak into your floor carpet will allow the corrosive road salt in the slush to cause unsightly stains and corrode the metal floor underneath the carpet.

Portable Hand Vacuum

To keep your interior clean and tidy, consider purchasing a handheld vacuum for your car. A clean car will just plain feel better, and keep your car looking as brand new as the day you first bought it!

Oil Change

When's the last time you got an oil change? We hope it wasn't too long ago, as it is critically important to your vehicle to get an oil change every 3,000–5,000 miles. Bring your vehicle into our Graff Mt Pleasant Service Department for an oil change this month, that way your car, truck, or SUV will run better and you won't have to worry about your engine overheating and warping internal components.

Winter Car Care

While winter continues to blanket Michigan in snow and ice, it's important to protect your vehicle and its internal components from the freezing temperatures and poor road conditions. Our Winter Car Care maintenance routine includes inspecting your tires, brakes, battery, and more to make sure your vehicle handles well on the icy roads and doesn't break down or become disabled out in the cold.

Spring Care Care

Once winter comes to an end, which thankfully isn't too far off, completing your Spring Car Care maintenance routine will be important. The toll winter has taken on your vehicle will be significant and to avoid further damage and get your vehicle running in top condition, you should bring it into our service center to get its alignment and suspension adjusted, fluids refilled, and much more.
