GM Produces First Self-Driving Chevrolet Vehicles

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.–– The future is right around the corner. Last month, GM announced that it had finished production of 130 self-driving Chevrolet Bolt vehicles. GM believes that this will help them gain a foothold in the race to create autonomous vehicles. Get a firsthand look into the future of driving as GM produces the first self-driving Chevrolet vehicles! While the timetable for these vehicles hasn't been released to the public, this technology's inception will revolutionize driving for everyone in the future. Read on to learn more about Chevrolet's cutting-edge autonomous vehicle's features!

The self-driving Chevy Bolt EV vehicles were revealed at the Orion Assembly Plant last month. GM has vowed to be the first car company to produce mass-marketed self-driving vehicles to the public, and with the revelation of the autonomous Bolt EV, are showing that they're capable of mass producing these vehicles. These Bolt EV vehicles are Level-4 autonomous vehicles, which means they're able to drive themselves in most situations, but need someone alert and ready behind the wheel to take control in case of any emergencies.

The Bolt's LIDAR, or laser radar technology, gives the vehicle a 360 degree view of its surroundings to allow it to adjust its speed and brake accordingly. They are equipped with sensors, radars, and cameras to keep their drivers safe in any situation, but can still be driven like a normal vehicle if need be. 

"Each LIDAR has 32 lasers and spins 360 degrees, providing a detailed view of the world to the car," said Kyle Vogt, CEO of Cruise Automation, a company acquired by GM last year that develops the software necessary to operate self-driving cars. “There are even a couple of cameras that are dedicated just to seeing traffic lights to make sure you don’t run red lights.”

GM's CFO, Chuck Stevens, has vowed to run the self-driving department like a Silicon Valley startup company, investing over $150 million per quarter in the technology to make sure it's available to the public soon. They have also hired over 1,000 new engineers to help produce and innovate this technology at an accelerated rate to market it to the public. While other vehicle companies like Ford and BMW have promised to publicly sell autonomous vehicles by 2021, GM hopes to have their self-driving cars on the road sooner than that with additional help from their investments and engineering prowess.

Will General Motors Create A Camaro Hybrid Option?

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - 2015 has definitely been the year of the sixth-generation Camaro — sorry Mustang — and now the rumors are starting to drift: will General Motors create a Camaro hybrid option? Many automotive insiders believe that this would be a very smart move for GM, but recently the engineering team at LSXtv stated that the hybrid Camaro might not be an option for a long time.

Now, could there be a day when a hybrid Camaro graces showroom floors? Yes. However don't hold your breath. Chevrolet and GM claim that Camaro as THE premier sports car, and a hybrid option just goes against the Camaro brand's identity.

The technology needed to implement a Hybrid system into a sports car like the Camaro is extremely difficult to produce, and would be an entry into an unknown realm of performance for Chevy. If hybridization does indeed occur in a GM sports car, we believe it would happen initially with the Corvette before the Camaro. Like it or not, the Camaro is indeed a true colloquial vehicle and a leap into the the hybrid territory would just be way too expensive for the immediate time period.

So, will General Motors create a Camaro hybrid option? Maybe, but as previously stated, don't hold your breath. Buick is taking that a step further, and is now offering a promotion that will make a refreshing offer to potential buyers - Buick is now offering a 24-hour test drive titled "24 Hours of Happiness Test Drive Event".  

Buick feels like no-one should make the decision on purchasing a $40,000 vehicle after a 10-minute test drive, so they upped the ante! Now, potential buyers can see how the car will fit into their life and their family's lives by taking the car out for a 24-hour test drive. Do the kids like it? Does it fit in the garage? Buick has been going through a mini-rebranding of sorts, no longer is the Buick just the car your grandfather had. Duncan Aldred, U.S VP for Buick explained that the 24-hour test drive is one major way Buick can change people's perceptions of the brand! General Motors has done things like this in the past, and the test was "a fairly obvious answer to the problem Buick had", explains Aldred. He wanted to make sure the test-drive event was in line with Buick's new DNA — quiet, peaceful, refined.

Drowsy Driving Is Just As Bad As Drunk Driving

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - A drowsy driver is a dangerous driver. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drowsiness or fatigue is the main cause of up to 100,000 police-reported passenger vehicle incidents a year, killing at least 1,500 and injuring 71,000. Even more fatigue-related incidents go unreported making drowsy driving just as bad as drunk driving.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not truck drivers causing there accidents. Only 1% of all the reported drowsy driving incidents are cause by semi-truck drivers due to a recent federal law that states truck drivers can only driver for 10 hours at a time in a 24 hour period. Surprisingly, in many aspects drowsy driving is much like drunk driving. When it comes to driving under the influence of alcohol, once someone has a blood alcohol level of .08% he or she is legally drunk. Recent studies have shown that a driver who has gone a day without sleep shows the same factors as a driver registering .10% blood alcohol level which is well above the legal limit.

Drowsy driving is just as bad as drunk driving, and both show very similiar signs when out on the road. Both occurrences show drivers with slower reaction times, decreased awareness, impaired judgement and increased aggressiveness. In a recent study, nine out of ten North American police officers interviewed had pulled over a drowsy driver who they thought was actually a drunk driver.

Drowsy driving is just as bad as drunk driving and parents and guardians should talk about it with their kids JUST as much. Meet The 2016 Chevy Camaro

MT.PLEASANT, Mich. – Get ready to meet the 2016 Chevy Camaro! This past Saturday, General Motors presented the new 2016 Camaro to the world. The assembled fans, media and auto-world insiders waited impatiently for Chevy to reveal the muscle car that has been the talk of the town since Chevrolet started revealing parts of the new car a few weeks ago. In a muscle car war that brings in the heavy weights like the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger, the Camaro rolled into battle with SIX prototypes to the unveiling on Belle Isle.

The new 2016 Camaro is a softer-edged car that looks completely different than the 5^th generation Camaro currently sitting at dealerships across the country. The only parts they have truly in common are the Chevrolet bow-tie badge on the trunk and the SS badge on the V8-powered SS models, according to GM.  Coming in at 200 pounds lighter, the new design makes the Camaro look lower and wider even though its actual dimensions are within 2 inches of the current Camaro model. The sixth generation Camaro will be available in both V8 and V6 engines, each more powerful than the current model's V8 and V6, as well as with a turbocharges 4-cylinder engine.

GM's CEO Mary spoke of the new Camaro to Bloomberg Television, stating that; "Every inch of has been improved." When asked if the Camaro will outsell the Mustang, she stated; "I think we will, and that is our goal." The all-new 2016 Camaro will now head on a countrywide promo tour that includes stops at the MLB All-Star Game in Cincinnati and the Woodward Dream Cruise where fans of the muscle car can meet the 2016 Chevy Camaro in person, before ending the summer at the Los Angeles Auto Show. After that, the 2016 will pull into dealerships this fall, finally available to the waiting public!
