2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 Durabed is the Largest in its Class

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Boasting best-in-class cargo volume, box depth and box length at floor in addition to a segment-leading 12 fixed tie-downs and an exclusive power tailgate, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has the most functional and largest pick-up truck bed on the market.

“The bed is the heart and soul of any pickup, so we made several improvements to the bed of the all-new Silverado to give our customers an even better hauling experience,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer, Full-Size Trucks, General Motors. “We’ve added so many features and benefits that it deserves its own name – Durabed.”

Every bed size in the 2019 Silverado line-up has increased significantly compared to the 2018 model year:

• 2018:
• Short box: 53 cubic feet
• Standard box: 62 cubic feet
• Long box: 75 cubic feet

• 2019:
• Short box: 63 cubic feet
• Standard box: 72 cubic feet
• Long box: 89 cubic feet

In order to achieve a short box option that is 20% more than the competition, Chevy widened the maximum width of the bed floor nearly 10% (7 inches), and implemented this across all bed sizes for the 2019 Silverado.

Additionally, a higher grade steel is being used in the construction of the Durabed for 2019:

• BED MATERIAL:
• 2019 Silverado: High-strength steel (500 MPa)
• 2019 Ford F-Series: Aluminum
• 2019 Ram 1500: High-strength steel (340 MPa)

In terms of cargo box space, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado now leads the competition by at least 10 cubic feet. As for cargo box depth and length at floor, the 2019 Silverado now leads between 1-10 inches.

The 2019 Chevy Silverado now features 12 fixed tie-downs, with the strength of each being doubled from 250 lbs. to 500 lbs. of force before bending. An additional 9 moveable tie-downs are also available for more cargo flexibility. With 21 tie-down points in all, the 2019 Silverado sports the most of any pick-up truck available.

2019 Silverado Leads Industry Innovation with Dynamic Fuel Management

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will feature the most advanced gasoline V-8 engines in the brand's history: updated versions of their proven 5.3L and 6.2L V-8s with Dynamic Fuel Management. An industry-first, this innovative cylinder deactivation technology enables the engines to operate in 17 different cylinder patterns to optimize power delivery and efficiency.

“Chevrolet first introduced its Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system in 2005, and Dynamic Fuel Management is a natural progression of the technology,” says Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer. “Dynamic Fuel Management enables only the cylinders needed to deliver the power you want, seamlessly delivering the best balance of power and fuel economy.”

Compared to the current Active Fuel Management, which alternates between eight and four-cylinder modes, Dynamic Fuel Management features 17 cylinder patterns, which mixes them constantly to optimize efficiency and power delivery at all speeds.

During an industry-standard test schedule, the 2019 Silverado 2WD featuring the 5.3L engine with Dynamic Fuel Management operated with fewer than eight active cylinders more than 60% of the time, which is about 9% more than a comparably equipped 2018 model with Active Fuel Management.

Dynamic Fuel Management utilizes an electromechanical system that deactivates and reactivates all 16 of the engine's hydraulic valve filters, controlling valve actuation. This system uses solenoids to deliver oil pressure to control ports in the lifters, which activate and deactivate the lifters' latching mechanisms. During deactivation of a cylinder, the two-piece lifters collapse on themselves to prevent valve opening. During reactivation, solenoids send an oil pressure signal to the control ports on the lifters and latching mechanisms to restore them to normal function, allowing the valves to open and close.

“The increased variability of Dynamic Fuel Management means the engine will operate more often with a reduced number of cylinders, which saves fuel across the board,” says Lee. “Better yet, the transitions are transparent, and because the system is torque-based, you’ve always got that satisfying feeling of power on demand that comes from Chevy’s Gen V Small Block V-8 engines.”

The 5.3L V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management is SAE-certified at 355 horsepower and 383 lb. ft. of torque, and is matched with a Hydra-Matic eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 6.2L V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management - the largest and most powerful gas V-8 in the segment - is SAE-certified at 420 horsepower and 460 lb. ft. of torque, and is matched with a Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission.

Both transmission feature significant enhancements designed to improve shift quality, as well as a new centrifugal pendulum absorber torque converter that reduces vibrations during cylinder deactivation to improve smoothness.

The new Dynamic Fuel Management engines also feature optional stop/start technology that helps to conserve fuel in stop-go traffic. The 5.3L engine comes standard in the LTZ and High Country models and is available on the LT, RST, and Trail Boss. The 6.2L engine is also available in the LZT and High Country.

The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado hits showrooms this fall. EPA fuel economy ratings are not yet available and will be closer to launch.

The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 Offers Multiple Engine and Transmission Combos

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Variety. That's the focus of the upcoming 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500, which is estimated to hit showrooms sometime this fall. Featuring eight different trims and six engine/transmission combinations, there's a 2019 Silverado 1500 to perfectly fit for everyone's performance, efficiency, technology, and value needs.

"A major focus of the next-generation Silverado is expanding the range of choices," says Tim Asoklis, chief engineer for the 2019 Silverado 1500. "With all-new engines and a broader model range, there's a Silverado for everyone, whether you're buying your first pick-up or your tenth."

The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 propulsion line-up includes:

• Over half of the models will be equipped with the most advanced V8 engines in Chevy's history. Updated versions of Chevrolet's proven 5.3L and 6.2L engines with industry-first Dynamic Fuel Management featuring 17 different modes of cylinder deactivation.

• An all-new, advanced 2.7L Turbo engine replaces the 4.3L V-6 as the standard on the high-volume Silverado LT and new Silverado RST. It expects to offer 22% more torque, greater fuel efficiency, and a stronger power to weight ratio than the current model.

• Tried and true 4.3L V-6 and 5.3L V-8 engines deliver full-size truck capability and performance for the most affordable trucks in the Silverado lineup.

• An all-new, Duramax 3.0L inline-six turbo diesel. ETA early 2019.

A SILVERADO - AND AN ENGINE - FOR EVERYONE

Each of the six engine/transmission combinations available in the 2019 Silverado 1500 is matched with an exterior design and interior features, giving each trim its own distinct personality. These are based on three customer profiles: High Value, High Volume, and High Feature.

High Value: If you're looking for full-size truck capability and the highest level of affordability, the Work Truck (WT), Custom and Custom Trail Boss trims offer two engine/transmission combos that could work for you:

•  Standard: 4.3L V-6 with Active Fuel Management and a six-speed automatic transmission (SAE-certified at 285 hp/305 lb-ft.)

• Available: 5.3L V-8 with Active Fuel Management and a six-speed automatic transmission (SAE-certified 355 hp/383 lb-ft.)

High Volume: If you're shopping for something that brings the best of all worlds, the LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss offer a fantastic balance of technology, efficiency, and performance:

• Standard (LT and RST): All-new 2.7L Turbo with Active Fuel Management and stop/start technology paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission (SAE-certified at 285 hp/305 lb-ft.)

IMPROVED DRIVING EXPERIENCE

The performance of each engine/transmission combination available in the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 benefits from a truck that is lighter and more aerodynamic than the previous model.

“With less weight and less wind resistance, we improved the driving dynamics without sacrificing fuel efficiency,” said Asoklis. “The next-gen Silverado is a bigger truck, but the chassis feels more responsive and acceleration is more pronounced. I would argue it’s the best-driving truck we have ever built.”

The 2019 Silverado is larger than its predecessor, including an up to 3.9-inch (100mm) longer wheelbase, but with an overall length that is only 1.6 inches (41mm) longer. This enables more cargo volume as well as more interior room for all cab lengths. Remarkably, it’s also much lighter, weighing up to 450 pounds (204 kg) less than the current Silverado when comparing crew cab V-8 models, due to extensive use of mixed materials and advanced manufacturing.

To improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the next-gen Silverado, the front grille features functional air curtains, similar to those we saw first on the sixth-generation Camaro, which help to reduce wind drag by routing air around the front wheel wells. The powerful side profile also enhances aerodynamics, with an integrated spoiler at the rear edge of the cab that directs air onto the contoured tailgate, reducing wind drag from the bed. Most models also feature active aero shutters integrated into the front grille that close to reduce wind drag and open to provide improved engine cooling when needed. These changes result in a 7% increase in aerodynamic efficiency for the 2019 Silverado 1500.

BIG SHOES TO FILL

The new 2019 Silverado 1500, has the lofty task of improving upon the legacy of the Most Dependable, Longest Lasting full-size pickups on the road. To do so, the next-gen truck will go through more than 475,000 validation tests and reach a staggering seven million miles of real-world road testing before the first model is delivered to showrooms.

That includes several tests for the Silverado engines and transmissions that will simulate a range of customer needs:

• Each type of engine was first subjected to a “torture test” in a dynamometer test cell, running for months nonstop to simulate a lifetime of maximum hot and cold cycles.
• Each Silverado variant is certified to the SAE J2807 standard for towing and payload capacity. Certification requires a gauntlet of grueling tests such as the Davis Dam test, in which the truck must carry its maximum gross combined vehicle weight up a 7% grade in 110-degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celcius) heat, with no reduction in performance, including air-conditioning.
• Chevrolet engineers prove every Silverado engine and transmission design for lubrication capability on tilt stands, originally developed for the Corvette, that tilt at an angle of up to 53 degrees and can simulate angles at a rate of up to 40 degrees a second — the equivalent of up to 1.4g.

Chevrolet Impresses at the 2018 North American International Auto Show

MT. PLEASANT, Mich., –– The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) is being held in Detroit from January 20th through the 28th to delight of gearheads everywhere. All of the foreign, domestic, and Detroit-based auto dealers will be unveiling 2018 (and future) models vehicles, concepts, and auto experiences to give fans a look at what they can expect in the new year. Chevrolet always had strong showings at NAIAS, taking home North American Car of the Year honors for the 2018 Chevy Bolt EV last year, and so far 2018 has not been a disappointment. Chevy has wowed and impressed fans and auto show attendees alike at NAIAS by unveiling the all-new 2019 Silverado 1500, hosting a virtual reality vehicle testing experience, and showcasing new 2018 Colorado, Cruze, Camaro, Corvette, and Spark models.

Unveiling the 2019 Chevy Silverado at NAIAS

Chevrolet had originally given a sneak peek of the 2019 Silverado to its Truck Legends program members at the Chevy Truck Centennial Celebration recently but has since introduced the latest iteration of America's most dependable, longest-lasting pickup to the public at NAIAS. The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is exceptional and designed with special attention to creating a tough, powerful, and capable truck. The new Silverado is up to 450 pounds lighter than previous models for improved performance and fuel economy and its 8 specialized trim levels are powered by six engine/transmission options. These options include the all-new Duramax 3.0L inline-six diesel and new 5.3L and 6.2L V-8s with industry-first Dynamic Fuel Management. The new 2019 Silverado also boasts best-in-class cargo volume in every bed length, with the short-box offering 63 cubic feet of volume, up to 20 percent more than a competitor’s short-box.

The 2019 Silverado will also have plenty of impressive technology and design features to improve the driver experience, including an available class-exclusive power up/down tailgate that can be operated from the key fob, interior button or by hand. Also, to honor its 100-year heritage, the “CHEVROLET” name stamped on the tailgate similar to the iconic Chevy trucks of the 1950s and ‘60s.

Experience Virtual Reality Vehicle Testing 

Those in attendance at NAIAS can experience what its like to ride along in a new Chevy on vehicle testing runs. The Chevrolet Virtual Dynamics Lab is a 4-D virtual reality experience that offers a 360-degree, front seat passenger ride through a variety of courses including gravel roads, extreme temperature labs and rock climbs that you would find at GM’s testing facilities, such as the Milford Proving Ground. Chevrolet has an unwavering commitment to designing high-quality vehicles for its customers and has them tested in chambers capable of simulating extreme environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, altitudes, humidity, and wind speeds in addition to their miles and miles of road testing. This virtual reality experience is a chance for Chevrolet to show its customers the various rigors that they put their vehicles through in order to produce the best sedans, trucks, and SUVs out on the road.

The Chevrolet Virtual Dynamics Lab 4-D experience will be open during normal hours on public show days.
