Winter Driving Tips to Keep You Safe

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,–– Michigan winters can be quite perilous and create dangerous roads for drivers of all experience levels. While there's no real way to avoid driving until springtime, you can follow a few rules and suggestions to keep yourself out of harm's way on the road. So read our winter driving tips to keep you safe this year!

Winter Driving Tips to Keep you Safe

Clean Off Your Vehicle

Before you even start driving, it is extremely important to clean all the snow and ice off of your vehicle's windshield, windows, headlights, and brake lights. Clear visibility while driving is crucial to your safety while driving out on winter roads and to the safety of other drivers. We can't tell you how often we see somebody trying to drive to work in the morning while looking through a tiny little hole they cleared in the ice on their windshield. Simply put, that is not safe, and you should never do it. Take the time to clear off your windshield and other windows.

Drive Slowly

May seem like a no-brainer, but driving slow is the number one way to stay safe on the roads this winter. It allows you to have more time to brake, react to other vehicles, and will lessen the impact of any uncontrolled steering.

Give More Space Between Vehicles

This tip is under the same category as driving slower, but it is uniquely important all the same. Allowing for double or even triple the amount of distance you would normally give between you and the vehicle in front of you is important on snowy roads. In fact, the recommended that the normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds in snowy conditions. The added space allows you more time to react to their movements and stop if need be.

Don't Brake Abruptly

Putting your foot down hard on the brake pedal is not a wise choice this winter. Instead, if you need to stop, slowly apply the brake. This way your wheels will slow their rotation in a controlled manner before coming to a complete stop. A hard stop will make your tires lose their grip on the road and slip.

No Sharp Turns

Make slow, wide, and deliberate turns on poor road conditions to maintain control of your vehicle. Sharp or fast turns through intersections or elsewhere can cause your vehicle to fishtail, swinging the back of the car out of control.

Do Not Use Cruise Control

Cruise control is normally a helpful tool, but it can be extremely dangerous to use during winter. Let's say you're driving on the highway or just a normal road with cruise control activated. If your vehicle slides on some ice, slush, or snow and your wheels may be facing a different direction. The cruise control will then keep you acceleration on your new, accidental path potentially hurdling you into off the road, into a ditch, or maybe even into oncoming traffic.

Winter Car Care

The best way to ensure your vehicle is up to the task of winter driving is by completing our Winter Car Care maintenance routine. During freezing temps your vehicle's internal components can become compromised, crack, break, or become disabled. It's also important to get your vehicle's battery, tire pressure and tread, heating, and other components before the winter fully sets in.

Watch the Weather

Keep an eye on the weather channel or other meteorology services for what is headed your way. If possible, it is always advisable to avoid driving during snowstorms or in other poor road conditions.

Practice in a Parking Lot

The best way to become comfortable and skilled at winter driver is to practice. Find an empty parking lot with some snow and ice that you can practice turns, braking, and more so that you're prepared for anything out on the road.

Stay safe this winter by following our driving tips to let your vehicle handle best on the snow and ice while avoiding any accidents. If you're worried about you and your passenger's well being out on the road, in general, we recommend reading up on Chevrolet's new advanced safety features available on most new 2018 Chevy models. Features like the Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist Technology, Forward Safety Awareness, and more can help make driving a much safer and more relaxing endeavor.

How to Prep Your Home and Car for the Cold Weather

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,–– Michigan winters can be particularly nasty, and the freezing temperatures we are known to experience can take their toll on your house and your vehicle. There's a number of internal automotive components that can wear down more quickly in the cold. Same goes for your home as well! But thankfully, you can take steps to protect both your house and your ride from winter's inclement weather. Read on learn how to prep your home and car for the cold weather.

Prep Your Home:

Protect Your Pipes - You do not want to deal with the catastrophe of having frozen pipes that crack and then burst come springtime. To ensure this doesn't happen, disconnect and store outdoor hoses, cover outdoor faucets, and drain the water from any outdoor sprinkler systems. Additionally, make sure to protect any water pipes that are in unheated areas of your home with insulation.

Check Your Furnace -
You don't want to go through any amount of time this winter without a working furnace, so before the weather gets too cold, test out your furnace to make sure it's running well. Also, to ensure efficiency, we recommend changing your furnace filter right now and then every two to four months until the cold weather subsides.

Prevent Ice Dams - Ice damns are large pieces of ice that build up on the edges of your roof, usually in a gutter, that can seriously damage the structural integrity of your roof. To avoid allowing any ice damns to occur, start by cleaning out your gutters. Then, invest in a de-icing cable system that can be installed on your roof, or purchase an extendable roof rake to use to shovel off the snow that accumulates on your roof so that the ice damns won't begin to form.

Clean and Store Lawn Equipment -
It's important to properly winterize and store your lawn equipment for the winter. Start by emptying the fuel in your equipment, as gasoline can damage fuel lines and other components if it sits there for too long unused. You should also clean off any dirt, grime, oil, or grass that is on your lawn mower, leaf blower, etc.

Seal Doors and Windows - Use caulk to seal around your windows and install weather stripping around doors as needed to help keep the warm air in your house from escaping outside, saving you money on your heating bill.

Inspect Fireplace and Chimney -
Don't lose any of the warm air in your home by forgetting to close your chimney's flue all the way. Put your hand up your chimney to check, you shouldn't be able to feel any cold air coming down the chimney.

Other Winter Essentials - Make sure you have road salt and shovels to keep your driveway ice and snow-free. Also, a backup generator is a good thing to have in case of emergency or a power outage.

Prep your Car:

Make an Emergency Kit - Everyone should have a winter emergency kit in their car during these colder months. It should include a first aid kit, jumper cables, emergency cash, flashlight, cell phone charger, and additional cash. Additionally, we recommend that you keep sand/kitty litter and a shovel in your vehicle in case you get stuck in a snowbank.

Check Your Engine Coolant/Antifreeze Levels - These fluids will help keep your engine's radiator from freezing or overheating which is especially important during the winter months when the temperatures drop below freezing. You can pop the hood of your vehicle to check your fluid levels or you can always bring your vehicle into our Service Center to have your levels checked and refilled if need be.

Check Your Tire Pressure and Tread Depth - As we all know, driving in snow and ice can be hazardous. Avoid slipping and sliding on winter roads by keeping your tire pressure at the optimal level and making sure that your tire tread isn't worn down. Bald and under-inflated tires will dramatically reduce your handling on the road, so ensure your safety this winter by either maintaining your tires or purchasing new ones.

Get Your Heating and Ventilation Fixed - Getting the heating and ventilation systems in your vehicle checked and/or fixed is extremely important this time of year. You won't be able to defrost your windshield in the morning so that you can see the road properly, and you'll be unable to warm up the cabin of your vehicle, neither of which are safe things to experience.

For additional tips and information to get your vehicle in top shape before the snow and ice arrive, we recommend reading our Fall Car Care guide to prepare for the coming winter weather. It's important to how to prep your home and car for the cold weather this time of year! If you have any questions on how to get your vehicle ready for winter or need any routine maintenance done before the snow falls, visit our Graff Mt. Pleasant Service Center. Our knowledgeable and friendly service technicians will be happy to assist you with anything you need. Winter Car Tips to Ready You For the Cold

Winter Car Tips to Ready You For the Cold

MT.PLEASANT, MI – Michigan winters can be ruthless with their freezing temperatures and piles of snow. Winter isn’t just rough on us, though; it can be hard on your car, too. Fortunately, we have some great winter car tips to ready you for the cold that will help you have a safe and enjoyable season.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car. Having one of these will be a lifesaver if something goes wrong. A few things that should be in this kit include a flashlight, flares, engine oil, and jumper cables, to name a few. Here’s a full list from the DMV: http://bit.ly/1hsqZgT.
  • Check your belts and hoses. Your vehicle's belts and hoses should be checked every time you get a tune-up, but just to be safe, check them again when the weather turns cold. Freezing temperatures can crack and loosen belts and hoses, and if those break you’re stuck on the side of the road.
  • Replace windshield wiper blades. Every six months your wiper blades undergo wear and tear and should be replaced. Without properly working wipers, you’re putting yourself and other drivers at risk when it snows.
  • Fill your car with antifreeze. Antifreeze keeps your engine from freezing in the chilly weather. It’s usually mixed with water at a 50/50 ratio. The good news is most places sell antifreeze already mixed with the water so you don’t have to measure it out.
  • Check your battery. Batteries can last about three to five years. During the cold winter months your battery has to work much harder. If your battery is getting close to the end of its life, you should replace it before the weather gets too bad.
  • Invest in snow tires. Snow tires help greatly with traction, braking, and driver control, which are all very beneficial when driving in a snowstorm. Having the proper tires keeps you and other drivers safe.
Follow our winter car tips to ready you for the cold and you’ll stay safe and warm in your vehicle all season long. If you need any last minute auto service done come to our Isabella County used car dealer and we’ll take care of anything you need.

At Hank Graff Mt. Pleasant we strive to provide our customers with a car buying experience that is accommodating, stress-free and fun!
