Happy National Nutrition Month!

MT. PLEASANT, Mich -- Happy National Nutrition Month! As we "spring" into a new season, it's the perfect time to get those summer body goals in the works. While working out is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, nutrition should never be ignored. In this blog, we'll cover some of the top foods you need to be integrating into your eating plan to not only keep you looking great but feeling your best as well!

KALE

This leafy green has experienced quite the bought of popularity, especially in plant-based diets in recent years, and for good reason too. Dieticians claim that this plant is even healthier than spinach and is full of vitamins, minerals, and cancer-fighting compounds.

GARLIC

This popular relative of the onion is used in cuisines all over the world, but its benefits include much more than warding off vampires. Not only does garlic bring new, flavorful dimensions to dishes, but it's also extremely high in vitamins C, B1, B6, calcium, potassium, copper, manganese and selenium. It's also high in beneficial sulfur compounds such as allicin, contains various cancer-fighting properties, and has significant antibacterial and antifungal capabilities.

BLUEBERRIES

When it comes to the nutritional value of fruit, blueberries are in a league all their own. Although they're not as high in vitamins and minerals as vegetables are, they're packed with antioxidants. Additionally, studies have shown that they improve memory in older adults, and contain cancer-fighting properties.

DARK CHOCOLATE

Chocolate lovers rejoice! Your favorite sweet not only curbs those sugar cravings, it actually contains a lot of health benefits too! Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content is loaded with fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, plus an amazing range of antioxidants! In fact, studies have shown that dark chocolate contains more antioxidants than other food tested, including blueberries and acai berries! It also contains powerful health benefits like improved blood flow, lower blood pressure, and improved brain function. One study even suggests that people who consume chocolate more than five times a week have a 57% lower chance of heart disease. However, in order to take advantage of all these benefits make sure you're consuming chocolate with at least a 70% cocoa content, for best results, we suggest 85% or higher.

SEAWEED

The thought of consuming seaweed may make you turn up your nose, but don't snub this incredibly healthy vegetation! A longtime mainstay in Asian cuisine (and for good reason), these plants are slowly making their entrance in Western diets due to their particularly high counts of minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. It's also loaded with various bioactive compounds like phycocyanins and carotenoids. But where seaweed really shines is it's impressively high content of iodine, which is a mineral your body uses to make thyroid hormones. It does have a pretty distinct "ocean taste" but if you're not a fan of that flavor profile, you can always take it in supplement form.

AVOCADO

Avocados are a fruit that's in a class of their own. They're extremely good for you, and contain a wide variety of nutrients, including 20 different vitamins and minerals. They do not contain any cholesterol or sodium and are revered by many dieticians for their high content of healthy fats. Additionally, they're loaded with fiber, and contain more potassium that bananas!

CHIA SEEDS

Recognized as one of the healthiest foods on the planet, chia seeds are loaded with properties that have incredible benefits for your body and your brain. They contain high levels of healthy fats, calcium, magnesium, protein, fiber, zinc, and various vitamins. Donned a superfood, these tiny seeds have risen to great popularity in the past few years, and are championed for the ability to contribute to weight loss as well. Additionally, studies have shown they may lower your risk of heart disease, reduce blood sugar levels, reduce chronic inflammation, and more!

BROCCOLI

When it comes to great-tasting nutrition, broccoli is an all-star food with numerous health benefits. It contains high amounts of sulforaphane, which scientists are currently studying the anti-cancer properties of. It also presents high amounts of vitamin C, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. In addition, it contains folate which is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells in the body.

MISO PASTE

Another traditional ingredient in most Asian diets, Miso paste is made from fermented soybeans and grains and contains millions of beneficial bacteria. It stimulates the digestion system, energizes the body, and lends a distinct umami dimension to the flavor of your dishes. It's an excellent source of copper, manganese, vitamin K, protein and zinc. Plus, it's incredibly high in enzymes due to the fermentation process. While there is conflicting research on the negative effects that introducing soy into your diet may have, consuming miso in smaller quantities will not have a profound oestrogenic effect. Just make sure you thoroughly check the label before purchasing, as many soy products are made with genetically modified beans, so err on the side of caution and look for a brand that is created with organically grown ingredients.

TURMERIC

This boldly-pigmented spice is major player in Indian cuisine and is used to give curry it's yellow hue. But brightly colored dishes isn't it's only claim to fame. This herb has been the subject of numerous studies which have resulted in this super spice's popularity. Its active ingredient is curcumin which has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a strong antioxidant. The overall content of this ingredient is not high in the spice so for your body to properly absorb it, we recommend consuming it along with black pepper, or taking it as a tincture. It's also known to increase brain activity, and lower the risk of brain diseases, in addition to helping prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease, cancer, arthritis, and age-related chronic diseases. It has also shown some promise in smaller studies for the treatment of depression, but as always, consult your doctor before making this your primary method of treatment.

QUINOA

This ancient grain, nicknamed the "mother of all grains" by the Incas, provides a wide array of health benefits. There are hundreds of cultivated strains, but the most readily available in the US are white, red, and black. Unlike other whole grains, it is naturally gluten-free, and is a complete protein; it contains high amounts of potassium, iron, zinc, copper, fatty acids, magnesium, and much more! It has been known to help prevent kidney stones, improve blood sugar control, prevent hemorrhoids, and constipation. Due to its status as a complete protein, it's an excellent choice for those that follow vegetarian or vegan diets, but we recommend it for meat-eaters too! Just make sure you rinse it before cooking as it has a naturally bitter coating that called saponin that works as a natural insecticide.

We hope you found our list of highly-nutritional foods to be helpful and educational, there are obviously so many more super foods that we did not include, but these are a few of our favorites. Do you have any favorite healthy, whole, foods we didn't mention? Comment and let us know. Happy National Nutrition Month! We hope you stay happy & healthy. Until next time!

A Guide to Enjoying Valentines Day While You're Single

MT. PLEASANT, Mich -- Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and if you're not in a relationship, you might be dreading spending the popular romantic holiday alone. Chin up! Just because you're not taken doesn't mean you can't enjoy an awesome V-day on your own! Here's our guide to enjoying Valentine's Day while you're unattached. Relationship status? Self-empowered.

A SPA DAY IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA

Pro Tip: When you're single on Valentines Day, you get to spoil the MOST special person: YOU! Go all out with a massage, facial, acupuncture treatment or Reiki session, whatever feels good for you, because let's be real, you absolutely deserve it. Not into spas? Head to the gym, take a hot yoga class or go for a nature walk. Do whatever feeds your soul, because you're worth it.

PAY IT FORWARD

Not only is Valentines Day the holiday of love, but it also falls right in the middle of National Random Acts of Kindness Week! Pass some good karma out, because you never know exactly how much it will impact someone else's life. Check out volunteer opportunities in your area, visit a senior, pay for a stranger's lunch, the possibilities are endless. Plus, you'll be surprised by how fulfilling showing pure, selfless love for others can be.

HIT UP YOUR SQUAD

If you're lacking a little romance in your life, don't despair! Celebrate the love you share with your amazing friends! Write them a platonic love letter, have a V-Day potluck, go on a friend date, or have a night in with some good old Netflix and popcorn. The best part about spending the holiday with your besties? Guaranteed fun, no expectations.

WEAR SOMETHING FESTIVE

Get into the spirit of the day, and wear something that makes you feel good. Turn it up a notch with a cute little black dress, some red heels, and a show-stopping makeup look. Wear whatever makes you feel strong and beautiful. If you have to be with someone else to dress up, well, you're missing the point... EMPOWER YOURSELF!

DO YOU

It's your day and no one else's, so do what makes you feel happy and content. If the thought of going out into the world and running into happy couples as far as the eye can see makes you feel like cringing, STAY IN! Rock those sweatpants you should have thrown away 10 years ago, and slay that messy bun game. Cook your favorite food, or order a large pizza all for yourself. Cuddle with your dog or cat, and pop in your favorite comedic film. There is no judgment here because it's all about DOING YOU.

DO SOME INTROSPECTION

A little self-evaluation is always a great idea, and what better day to look at where you've been and where you want to be than Valentines Day? Reflect on how your past loves have made you a better person, celebrate your bravery and strength as a single person, or meditate on what you want in a future partner and put that law of attraction into action.

TREAT YOURSELF

Stop eyeing that pair of earrings, or those super cute shoes and just buy them! Take yourself out to the nicest restaurant in town and treat yourself to a meal fit for a celebrity. You don't need a partner to feel spoiled, just activate that self-love, and splurge away. It doesn't have to be a super expensive purchase, just something that will make your heart content.

How are you planning on spending your Valentines Day? Whether you're single or with someone special, we hope that you have an awesome day celebrating all the love that exists in the world. Planning to try any of our suggestions for enjoying the holiday on your own? Comment and let us know! We love hearing from you.

6 Indoor Plants that Anyone Can Grow

MT. PLEASANT, Mich -- If you're in possession of a black thumb, but have always wanted to spruce up your home with some indoor plants, all is not lost. While you could opt for greenery of the plastic variety, don't give up on the idea of bringing some real-life plant babies home. There's plenty of great flora options that anyone can grow, and are *almost* impossible to kill. We hope these adorable little guys inspire you to give gardening a second shot, or if you're an avid plant parent, to bring some new ones home!

1. JADE PLANT

This precious little succulent, once called the money plant is thought to bring good luck to their owners, which made them a popular housewarming gift. To keep your jade plant alive and well, make sure that it gets at least four or more hours of sunlight per day, the best way to achieve this is to place it in a room with a south-facing window. During the spring and summer, water it often to ensure the soil is always moist, but not wet. Reduce watering to monthly in the water. Ensure it's potted in succulent or a cacti mix soil, and kept in a temperature ranging from 50-70 degrees. Jade plants are known for their ease of propogation, so if you're looking for a cheap way to always have cute gifts on hand, this is the plant for you.

2. LUCKY BAMBOO

If you're a beginning houseplant gardener, the fascinating and beautiful lucky bamboo plant is the perfect guinea pig. Oddly enough, the plant actually isn't bamboo at all, it's a member of the Dracaena family, and is only labeled bamboo because of the woody quality of it's stems. To keep your lucky bamboo pulling in good fortune, ensure that it's in an area full of bright light. It does not do well in direct, hot sunlight, but most plant experts say a north-facing window is a good home for this little guy. Make sure the plant's roots are fully covered in distilled or purified water, and switch it out every 2 months or so. Some plant experts say it's unnessescary to use fertilizer, but if you feel the need to, there's one called Super Green formulated specifically for Lucky Bamboo growing in water. Make sure you brush the leaves off every so often with a soft brush as well, this will keep dust from collecting and clogging up the plant's pores.

3. ALOE VERA

Aloe Vera is the perfect kitchen companion, as the gel that collects within the stalks is excellent for treating burns. They require very little care, and you can feel good knowing that this plant will not only improve the aesthetics of your home, it serves a purpose as well. Keep it in a bright window, so it can soak up maximum sunshine, water it only when the leaves feel dry or brittle, and make sure that the water drains out. It should be planted in a succulent or cacti mix soil, and like the majority of succulents, fertilizer is not necessary.

4. PEACE LILY

Peace lilies are extremely popular houseplants, due to their beauty and easy care routine. These plants are tropical and evergreen, so they need dappled sunlight and consistent moisture. Pot them with a well-draining, all-purpose potting soil, and repot annually in the spring. Do not overwater, but keep the soil consistently moist. Peace lilies are also extremely sensitive to chemicals, so make sure you use distilled or filtered water. They plants thrive in high humidity, so give the leaves regular misting, or place them on top of a tray of wet gravel. Due to their tropical origins, they do best when kept in a temperature of 70 degrees or above, do not keep in direct sunlight, but ensure their home is in a well-lit area. Peace lilies are extremely poisonous, so make sure to keep them away from pets and children.

5. ZZ PLANT

You couldn't kill this plant if you tried! It's a slow grower, but their care is easy as can be. They do well in low light or bright light, and only need water when their soil is very dry. They look so green and sturdy, that they are often taken for artificial plants, so even if you give them a fair amount of neglect, they'll still look on point. The ZZ plant is poisonous, so if you have children, dogs or cats, make sure that you keep it well out of reach.

6. JUNIPER BONSAI PLANT

If you're someone in possession of a black thumb, the word bonsai, probably spikes a tiny bit of fear in your heart. But don't worry, juniper bonsai trees are actually extremely hardy and durable. They need only moderate to direct light and require very little water, as their roots don't like wetness, but you can mist the leaves to give them a little rejuvenation. They will need a slight amount of pruning throughout the growth season, and should be repotted once every two years.

We hope this blog inspires you to bring some new greenery into your life! Plants are great for helping to beat those winter blues. Was there a plant we mentioned that you're interested in? Or were there any easy-care plants we missed? Comment and let us know!

At Hank Graff Mt. Pleasant we strive to provide our customers with a car buying experience that is accommodating, stress-free and fun! 3 New Year's Resolutions You Can Actually Keep

MT. PLEASANT, Mich -- New Year's resolutions, we all make them, we all don't keep them. January 1st we write that list of health, happiness and organization goals, and come February they just become another fridge decoration. It's hard to keep up with our New Year expectations for ourselves, and that's usually because we set unrealistic goals that we can't conceivably achieve. But don't despair, you don't have to throw away the idea of a "New Year, New You" here's a few New Year's resolutions that you can actually keep and tools that can help you can make them happen. Happy goal-setting everybody!

1.  IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL STAMINA

It's hard to stay focused and expand our cognitive capacities in a fast-paced modern world that's full of distractions. But buffing up your mental stamina has a lot of sweet benefits like, more controlled moods, faster learning abilities, and improved problem solving skills. It's just good for your all around mental-health, and therefore your productivity. There's plenty of tools that can expand your mental muscles like ancient meditation techniques and games, but let's be honest who has time for an hour long meditation session or a game of trivial pursuit? Never fear, the world of apps is here! Check out our favorite picks for tools to calm your mind and/or stretch it's mental capacities right from your smartphone or mobile device.

Meditation, Mindfulness, and Stress-Relieving Tools:

  • Headspace: If you've always wanted to try implementing meditation techniques into your daily schedule but never thought you'd have the time, this is the solution for you. It teaches basic mindfulness strategies in a fun and engaging way, in addition to offering 2-3 minute guided meditation sessions that explore topics like sleep, stress, focus and exercise. If you're still having a hard time sticking with the app, you can add friends to keep you motivated and on track.

  • MindMeister: Does your brain move a million miles a minute? Welcome to the club. Sometimes the issue doesn't necessarily have to do with mental capacity, but the ability to organize and focus on the thoughts that lead us towards health, organization, and success. Enter mindmapping. This process allows you to brainstorm in your usual chaotic manner, visually chart them out in no particular order, and then organize them into cohesive ideas and strategies. MindMeister can be used on it's online interface or from the app. You can create unlimited thought maps, add files and images, and export them to a PDF or PNG!

  • Ambi Pro: For most of us, especially those that live in major cities, our surroundings are boisterous, distracting, and can even be stress-inducing. Fill your day with ambient sounds to relax and concentrate your mind, focus more on your important thoughts, and block out the almost inescapable white noise of modern life. Ambi Pro utilizes looping audio recordings with a special algorithm that creates a blend of changing, soft noises that doesn't bore your agile brain. In addition it utilizes special digital reverb to give the sounds a sense of wholeness and depth. You can design and save your own presets, as well as program the sounds to switch on and off at specific times for total ambience control.

  • Day One: For some of us, the best way to identify, understand, and manage our thoughts are to write them down. Day One is a journaling tool that offers a beautiful, easy to use interface that aims to help you keep a clear mind. There's no ads, no distractions, so you can focus, uninterrupted. It's full of fun features that will make journaling seem like a hobby, and less like a chore, like the ability to add pictures, import iphone metadata so you can flesh out your entries with information like weather, news stories, and music you played that day. It also features numerous organization options, so you can browse your entries by calendar, timeline, maps or photos!
Brain-Training and Cognitive Capacity Tools:

  • Lumosity: This highly-popular brain-building app is reportedly used by 70 million people worldwide. Described as a cognitive science tool, it utilizes brain-training games to help you flex those mental muscles! But don't be put off by the term "cognitive science" the games are actually totally engaging and fun! It's also completely customizable, so you can choose the mental faculties you want to expand and it creates a daily routine of tasks to complete for you, tailored to the skills you want to test. The design is minimalistic and understated so that you can focus on the exercise at hand, and stay in the zone.

  • Elevate: Elevate operates on a similar concept to Lumosity, so similar, in fact that the two tools have a bit of an app-lover rivalry, with users staunchly defending their choice in online forums, blogs and articles. We encourage you to make your own judgements, as everyone's brain is different and therefore responds to different types of training tools, but Elevate seems to win a slightly larger amount of praise. It includes over 40 games, created by neural science experts, aimed at improving focus, speaking skills, processing speed, memory, math skills and more! As you train, the program keeps track of your movements, so you receive recorded proof of your progress, and for those who love a little friendly competition, you can even compare scores with your friends! Unlike Lumosity, the design of Elevate is bright and loud, with entertaining features like moving cartoon-like objects including nesting dolls and spaceships!

  • Memorado: Strong brain, strong life, is this app's motto. An innovative tool that combines brain-training with mindfulness this innovative cross-over provides a holistic approach to overall neural performance. It features 24 games with over 720 levels that stretch your cognitive abilities, in addition to 4 mindfulness levels that lower stress and restore mental balance. It's algorithm adjusts based on your progress, to create a personalized training schedule to help you meet and exceed your goals in addition to giving you access to numerous "in-house" neurologists and researchers to help answer your questions and give you motivation when you need it.

  • BrainHQ: This mental workout tool is in a class of it's own, and it should be, for the price of a full monthly or annual subscription! It's the most rigorous cognitive capacity app we've seen yet, backing up it's process with 30 years of research from top scientists around the world, and receiving praise from over 100 publications. It's numerous attention and brain-speed activities, as well as intelligence tests claim to provide a wide range of benefits, from better driving skills, higher confidence in intellectual conversation, better hearing in crowded places, and even a boost to your tennis game!

2.  MEET NEW PEOPLE

It's far too easy to get stuck in the rut of working 9-5, driving home, throwing a quick dinner together and vegging out on the couch until it's time to hit the hay. While it's hard to avoid slipping into this routine, it's extremely harmful to your mental health, besides, you're missing out on a lot of interesting events and opportunities that are happening around you everyday! Connecting with new people can have a huge impact on your health and happiness, it can help you learn and try new things,  enhance your communication skills, not to mention it can be a life-changing career move! Especially, if you are a naturally shy or introverted person, putting yourself out there and approaching strangers can be debilitating, but thanks to the conveniences of our modern world it doesn't have to be agonizing. Even if you consider yourself a people person, utilizing apps, online forums and people-meeting sites can connect you with amazing people who you probably never would have met otherwise. Check out our picks for modern tools that help you engage with interesting people in our modern era, or you could just approach that cool regular that hangs out at your coffee shop from open till close. Totally up to you.

  • Meetup: You've probably heard of this app, but have you used it? It's pretty handy for putting you into contact with people that share your causes, interests, and hobbies. It showcases groups based in thousands of cities that help you do more of what you love, while interacting with new people that share your passions. No matter what your interests are; photography, hiking, social justice, knitting or board games, there's bound to be a group in your area that will connect you with people like you.

  • WeGoDo: Think of this app as Facebook with a purpose. It connects your profile to people near you that are interested in the same hobbies and activities. Sounds like Meetup, right? Well, it's a little different. It offers a social media-esque experience, allowing you to post photos and comments about the things you've done, want to do, or what's been on your mind. In addition, it includes a news feed of local deals, curated content and recommendations.

  • Patook: A platonic friend-making app, Patook matches you with potential, new connections based on a point system. Once you create your profile, you will rate your various friendship preferences and then be matched to people who closest match your scorings. In order to connect, you can either send an anonymous message or rank each other to begin a conversation. It also includes public message boards, based on location, that allow you to schedule group meet-ups or simply share your thoughts.

  • WE3: Think that three's a crowd? This app disagrees, in fact it's creators think it's the optimal number as far as group friendships go. To be matched, you have to swipe through statement cards and reply with agree, disagree or neutral. Based on your responses, the app will place you in a "tribe" with two other individuals who have high compatibilities and are the same gender. Only members of the "tribes" you are placed in have the ability to view your profile, so your privacy is protected. This app is a great tool for those who struggle in one-on-one situations, or for those who are simply looking for group friendship.

3.  DISCOVER NEW MUSIC

There's a lot of scientific evidence that listening to music is good for your mental well being and physical health. It decreases stress, improves sleep, reduces depression, strengthens your memory and learning skills, and raises your IQ and verbal intelligence. It's easy to get stuck in a music rut, and while your go-to playlists may be familiar, but with so much great music out in the world, why settle for your same-old listening experiences? For those that aren't into the top 40 hits that stream on the radio, or don't have time to research lesser known artists, there's a couple playlist curation tools that will help you discover music you otherwise wouldn't find, without any extra hassle to you.

  • Mixcloud: Instead of recommending singular artists, Mixcloud matches you with mixes from both amateur and professional DJs that weave in and out of various genres and styles, giving you exposure to styles and artists you wouldn't usually be exposed to on your own. You can search for playlists by artist names or keywords, follow DJs you particularly enjoy, and learn about the songs that are the soundtrack to your day.

  • Bandcamp: An oldie but a goodie. This online music company has been around for 10 years, and it's still one of the best ways to find new artists and songs. The platform allows lesser-known, independent musicians to sell their music and set their own price, so you can feel good knowing that your purchase supports the artist, not a record label. The site includes weekly featured artists and staff merchandise picks so there's always something new for you to explore.

  • SoundCloud: Built for those who like to musically wander, the largest music and audio platform, SoundCloud, lets you discover a world of sound from a diverse creator community. You can share music, connect directly with artists, and access unique recordings of raw demos, breakthrough tracks and more!

  • Spotify: This music streaming platform comes with great features for finding music you'll love, among them being their radio stations and public playlists. But the greatest built-in feature is "Discover Weekly" which tracks your listening habits over the course of several weeks and then recommends artists based off your most listened to tracks. Plus you can archive your discover weekly playlists so if there's one you particularly like you can save it to revisit as often as you'd like.
