How to Take Care of Your Car This Fall

How to Take Care of Your Car this Fall

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,–– Fall is here, and winter is on its way. Soon the colder temperatures will be making you run to your closet to put on a sweatshirt. Turns out though, your vehicle is also affected by the changing of the seasons as well. During the colder seasons, important components of your vehicle can become worn or damaged due to the changing temperatures. Protect your vehicle and your investment by learning how to take care of your car this fall. In this blog, we'll inform you about the importance of your vehicle's belts and hoses, windshield, heating and ventilation system, and weather strips, and will also give you tips on putting together and maintaining an emergency kit to keep in your vehicle. Read on to find out more!

Belts and Hoses

How to Take Care of Your Car this Fall

Your engine requires a lot of working components in order to get you from Point A to Point B. The belts and hoses in your vehicle are some of the most important parts in your car. They transfer power and fluids throughout your vehicle to help it function properly. However, broken or damaged belts and hoses can potentially disable your engine or cause severe damage to it. In the fall and winter, colder temperatures can cause your belts and hoses to crack or break, which is why having them checked this time of year is extremely important.

Windshield Care

How to Take Care of Your Car this Fall

If you had to name off at least three important safety components in your vehicle, would you even think of naming your windshield? Probably not! Your windshield protects you from wind, dirt, and debris while you drive, but it also keeps your vehicle structurally intact in the event of a collision or rollover. Read up on our website page to learn more about what to do if you discover any cracks or chips, and how to prevent them from expanding and further damaging your windshield.

Heating and Ventilation System

How to Take Care of Your Car this Fall

Believe it or not, your heating and ventilation system is another extremely important safety component in your vehicle! The heating and ventilation system in your vehicle obviously keeps your cabin warm while you drive in cold weather and defrosts your windows so you're able to see out your windshield morning on your way to work. But if you get stuck on the side of the road for whatever reason during the upcoming winter months, your heating system will keep you from freezing until help arrives. Consult our website for more information on maintenance, care, and what to do if your heating and ventilation system isn't working.

Weather Strips

How to Take Care of Your Car this Fall

Have you ever wondered what the black rubber strips that surround your car doors are called? They're known as weather strips, and they're located around your windows, windshield, and trunk as well as your doors. They work by preventing water, dirt, and debris from entering your vehicle, and can become worn or damaged over time, which can be problematic during colder seasons. On our website, you can learn the importance of weather strips, how to spot damage on them, and how to know if they need to be replaced.

Emergency Kit

How to Take Care of Your Car this Fall

Our emergency kit page is full of information on putting together your very own emergency kit to keep in your vehicle, with tips on what to keep year-round and important seasonal items like a shovel or ice scraper. Today, we'll be going through a Chevrolet electric vehicle comparison to preview the similarities and differences of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV and the 2017 Chevrolet Volt. We'll be discussing features, benefits, and capabilities of both vehicles. While both have their own strengths, choosing between the two is a matter of preference! Read on to discover the benefits of the Chevrolet Bolt and Volt today!

2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV

Chevrolet Electric Vehicle Comparison

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a fully electric hatchback sedan that receives an impressive 238 miles-per-charge. As an energy efficient vehicle, the Bolt EV also comes equipped with one-pedal driving technology to save drivers additional energy. One-pedal driving technology allows drivers to recapture any energy expended from driving without having to touch your brakes. While driving in Low mode at any speed, you can slow down by lifting your foot from the accelerator. This impressive new technology extends the life of your brakes and improves the battery of your Bolt EV.

For the more adventurous type, the Bolt EV has the versatility needed for any journey. The seats in the Bolt EV can fold down to give drivers 56.6 cubic feet of cargo space so you can pack anything you need for your next vacation or adventure. Its interactive 10.2-inch Chevrolet MyLink display provides information on energy usage, vehicle details, driving habits, and much more. If you're interested in taking a closer look at the wide variety of features standard on the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV, take a look at our 2017 Bolt EV Model Overview page. New Volt owners can also rest easy knowing that their batteries receive an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty and 5 years/60,000 miles of 24-hour roadside assistance whenever it's needed.

Owners of the new 2017 Chevrolet Volt can take advantage of further energy savings with Regen On Demand technology and a real-time Driver Information Center located behind the steering wheel. Regen On Demand works similar to the one-pedal technology standard on the Bolt EV in that your vehicle can convert leftover energy into your battery to improve your electric vehicle range while you drive. How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,–– Every vehicle owner has to deal with routine maintenance at some point or another. Oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements are all necessary forms of routine maintenance that keep your vehicle running at peak efficiency. On the bright side, though, you can check several important components in the comfort of your own home. We've put together instructions to help you learn how to check your oil and tire pressure. If your tires' pressure is low or you need an oil change, schedule an appointment with us at Graff Mt. Pleasant for fast and friendly service today!

How to Check Your Oil

How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

Checking your oil is easy and only takes a few minutes! Follow these quick steps to find out whether or not you need an oil change:

What You'll Need: A cloth

Directions:
  1. Wait a few minutes after turning off your vehicle for your engine to cool down.
  2. Pop the hood and locate the yellow dipstick on your engine. (It should look similar to the image above.)
  3. Pull the dipstick out of your engine and wipe it on a cloth.
  4. Reinsert your dipstick and remove it one more time.
  5. Take a close look at the indicators on your dipstick. Locate the "full" and "empty" labels. If your oil levels are on or below the "empty" component, it's time for an oil change!

Signs You Need an Oil Change

How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

Typically, you should get your oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles, or whenever your vehicle owner's manual tells you to do so. If you aren't sure whether or not you need an oil change, don't worry, it is very easy to figure out for yourself! Keep an eye on these factors to determine whether or not you need an oil change:

  • Your Oil's Color: Fresh oil recently has a light brown, honey color, but over time, it darkens and becomes thicker. If your oil turns black, it's time to get an oil change, as black oil can contain particles that will damage your engine's components!
  • Your Oil's Consistency: The next time you check your oil, take a little bit of oil from your dipstick and rub it between your thumb and finger. If it feels coarse and gritty, it means your oil contains contaminants and needs to be changed.
  • Your Check Engine Light is On: If your check engine light comes on while you drive, schedule a service appointment right away. It could mean your oil needs to be changed or could potentially be something more serious. It's better to be safe than sorry!
  • Your Engine is Louder Than Normal: If your vehicle's engine is louder than it usually sounds, it could mean that your oil needs replacing. As engine oil ages, it loses a lot of its lubricating properties, which can cause your engine's components to create friction and can cause potential damage. Make sure this doesn't happen by scheduling service as soon as possible!

How to Check Your Tire Pressure

How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

Checking your tire pressure is almost as easy as checking your oil! It only takes a few minutes, but you'll want to check all four tires to be sure that they are all at least at the minimum pressure that is required of your vehicle. If you aren't sure what level your tire pressure should be, consult your vehicle owner's manual for more information. Follow these steps to check your tire pressure so that you can determine whether or not you need to re-inflate or replace your tires.

What You'll Need: a reliable tire pressure gauge

Directions:

  1. Wait several hours after driving to check your tire pressure when your tires cool down. That way, you'll receive a more accurate reading, as heat from driving can temporarily reduce your tire pressure.
  2. Remove the end caps on your tires' air valves (the small golden cylinders on your tires). Make sure to set them in a safe place so that they don't get lost.
  3. Insert your tire pressure gauge to check your PSI reading.
    1. If your reading is above the recommended PSI, push the air valve in to let out a little bit of air.
    2. If your reading is below the recommended PSI, fill your tire with air until you reach the recommended level.

Signs Your Tires Need Replacing

How to Check Your Oil and Tire Pressure

It's best to check your tires' air on a monthly basis so that they are always properly inflated or to see if they need replacing. Use these helpful tips to determine whether or not your tires need to be replaced:

  • Your Tire Keeps Deflating: This could be a leak in the tire or could mean your cap is loose. Either way, bring it in to our Service Center and we can have it looked at and patched up right away!
  • Your Tire is Flat: If your tire is too flat to drive on, you'll want to change it with your spare and bring your vehicle in as soon as possible! Driving on a flat tire can damage your vehicle's wheel, spokes, and other important components that make it possible for you to drive.
  • Your Tire's Tread is Low: If your tires have low tread, they're unable to grip the road efficiently and make driving on dirt roads or through weather conditions a much more difficult experience. Use the penny method to determine the tread level of your tires. If the tread is too low, bring your vehicle in and we'll replace your tires.

Keeping up on your routine maintenance can be the difference between you and a costly repair bill. Learning how to check your oil and tire pressure can help you save money and keep your vehicle running its best for years to come. Getting an oil change or tire replacement soon? Browse our service coupons to save on routine maintenance, from battery replacements to oil changes. See why Graff Mt. Pleasant should be your choice for vehicle service and feel free to contact us if you have any questions!

Bring Tailgate Games

CMU Tailgating Tips and Activities

Heading to the tailgate with friends or family? If you don't know the rules, follow this step-by-step guide for quick and simple instructions. Other games, like lawn golf, Kan Jam, and even a simple game of catch are tailgate games that everyone will enjoy!

Enjoy Free Giveaways

CMU Tailgating Tips and Activities

Every year, the CMU football team and local businesses hold promotions and giveaways at tailgates before the game. You can grab free hot dogs from Dog Central's tent and check out some of the freebies that local businesses hand out to tailgaters. Keep an eye on the football schedule for t-shirt and merchandise giveaways. Businesses have also been known to give away sunglasses, sweatshirts, and many other items.

Beat Traffic by Cooking After the Game

After the game is all said and done, you can avoid sitting in traffic by relaxing and cooking up whatever you have left on the grill! It'll save you time and keep everyone full.

Be Safe and Have Fun

CMU Tailgating Tips and Activities

Most importantly, make sure that you and your fellow tailgaters have a safe and fun time! Read up on the CMU Tailgating Policy before you head out to the game to make sure you don't break any rules. If you need a tailgating pass or a sound permit, make sure you fill out the applications for them,. Contact the CMU Police if you have any questions on rules or ordinances put out for specific tailgates. If you follow the rules and cooperate with the police, you're bound to have a great time at Kelly/Shorts Stadium!
