5 Famous Dads in History

5 Famous Dads in History

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Dads are many things to us. They're our protectors, sound advice-givers, and source of face-palm worthy jokes. Dads are great, and many of them have helped to shape history and change the world in one way or another, and not just by killing the spider in the bathtub.

This Father's Day, we at Graff Mt. Pleasant would like to share with you some famous dads in history!

5 Famous Dads in History

1. WILLIAM JACKSON SMART

Kicking off our list is the dad who inspired Father's Day, William Jackson Smart, a veteran of the American Civil War and later a farmer and single dad of six. Following the death of his wife during childbirth, Smart took over raising all six of their kids by himself, never remarrying. After hearing church sermon regarding the newly established Mother's Day, his daughter Sonora felt that fathers deserved their own day of honor as well, and originally suggested Smart's birthday as the holiday on which all dads would be recognized.

2. BARACK OBAMA

Next on our list of famous dads in history is our 44th president, Barack Obama. In addition to being the proud and lovably dorky father of two daughters, Barack made history in 2009 when he became the first African-American president of the United States. Widely regarded as the most progressive president since FDR, he continued to make history throughout his two terms in office by legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. Obama also ordered the military operation that took down Osama bin-Laden, ending the nearly 10-year search for the orchestrator of the 9/11 attacks.

3. JIM HENSON

Responsible for the show that would define the childhoods of several generations, Jim Henson was the proud father of five kids in addition to a legion of Muppets, most notably Kermit the Frog. While in college, Henson changed the television puppetry game by making it possible for the performer to work off-screen. He also believed that puppets should have "life and sensitivity", and thus began creating them from flexible, fabric-covered foam rubber as opposed to carved wood, which allowed them to express a wider array of emotions and become fully-realized beings rather than simply props.

4. STEPHEN KING

Widely regarded as the "King of Horror" and author of more than 200 works of fiction, Stephen King is a father of three, with his two sons both being accomplished writers themselves. In addition to his blood-curdling titles including Carrie and The Shining, King also penned many other popular novels such as The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption, all of which have been adapted into award-winning films.

5. BERRY GORDY

In addition to founding Motown Records and sparking a musical and cultural revolution, Berry Gordy is the father of eight children. Out of his Detroit-based recording studio Hitsville USA, Gordy shaped and launched the careers of many of history's most beloved musical acts including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and the Supremes.
