Tips on Becoming a Morning Person

Tips on Becoming a Morning Person
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - Becoming a morning person takes more than just waking up your alarm that is blasting heavy metal music or chugging a double shot espresso before you’ve even opened your eyes! No, becoming a morning person takes some fine-tuning of your nightly AND morning routines! We do have some tips on becoming a morning person that may make waking up a little bit easier –––

  • Sleep like the pros do! Getting enough sleep is the first step to becoming a fully functional morning person. When we are sleep deprived our reaction time slows down significantly, our blood pressure rises, and we tend to overeat as we continue to try to get an "energy boost" throughout the day.
  • Turn OFF the electronics, or keep them out of reach and out of sight at least. It’s usually best to completely stop using all electronics at least 45-60 minutes before bedtime.
  • Watch out for the danger foods. Avoid "danger foods" include spicy foods, chocolate, and alcohol too close to bedtime. Our suggestion is to stick to a nice, warm mug of decaffeinated tea!
  • Take a warm shower before bed. Stepping out from a steamy, warm shower into a cooler bedroom actually causes a slight decrease in body temperature. This will cause you feel drowsy and will help you fall asleep more easily.
  • Start slow. When attempting to wake up earlier, pick a time and then gradually work towards it. If you want to wake up at 7, but can’t seem to get up till 8, start by setting the clock at 7:45, then work back in 15-minute increments till you can wake up at 7.
  • Get up and get moving! Get a workout in first thing in the morning! A good sweat session in the morning helps to wake your body up, boost your metabolism, and will give you a surplus of endorphins to keep you all-smiles for the rest of the day.
  • Put on some tunes! Your favorite jam can be the ultimate cure to your morning grogginess! Whether it's "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift or “Dance Apocalyptic” by Janelle Monae, a pump-up song in the morning is a great way to start your day!
  • Eat a good breakfast. Many people find it difficult to eat breakfast in the morning. A great tip to fight this is to pre-plan! Whether you purchase healthy grab-and-go items like protein bars, fruit, or yogurt, or make something on your own (check out this Overnight Oatmeal Recipe), a nutritious breakfast helps give you the energy you need to start your day!

We hope that these simple tips on becoming a morning person help you transition into that early bird who gets the worm! Good Luck!
